It’s a quarter-acre lot of overgrown woodland in one of Florida’s poorest counties that the US president has owned and paid property taxes on since 2005 – having bought it for $1 from a woman who owned a photographic studio specialising in adult lingerie shoots.

SEBRING — Sun ’n Lake of Sebring and Henscratch tracts of land owned by Florida Fish and Wildlife have been fenced “to control illegal dumping, vandalism and off-road vehicle usage.”
FWC spokesman Gary Morse said the two properties had “sensitive upland and wetland habitat” that “were being negatively impacted.”

Amendment 1 was supposed to set aside 33 percent of taxes from real estate deals for buying and conserving land and depositing it in the Land Acquisition Trust Fund, a decades old trust established for land stewardship. Leading up to the 2014 referendum, backers sold the measure to voters as a pledge to spend the money on protecting natural areas and keeping pollution out of its waters.
But last year, the state spent just $50 million on lands, with lawmakers saying the cost of fighting wildfires, providing insurance and controlling pollution on privately owned land fell under the guidelines for spending Amendment 1 money.
"They’re taking the excess money, approximately $800 million this year, and using that for a tax break,” he said.

Switzerland has revealed it is considering an extradition request from Ukraine to hand over the son of a former Kazakh energy minister — and both men are facing money-laundering allegations in the United States and charges in Kazakhstan.
A New York court decision may further reveal details about the Kazakh family’s financial flows into condos in the Trump SoHo building, developed and sold by Bayrock. Bank records include large transfers from a now-sanctioned Cyprus lender.
Viktor, who is also a former mayor of Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city. Both Khrapunovs and Ilyas’ father-in-law, Mukhtar Ablyazov — an uber-wealthy fugitive banker who owned BTA Bank until it was seized by regulators in 2009 — face criminal charges in Kazakhstan. Authorities allege $10 billion went missing from the bank, Kazakhstan’s third largest, and that Ablyazov moved out at least $4 billion.
The country ranks in the bottom quarter on transparency measures, and Nazarbayev’s family is accused of stashing money in offshore companies.

Title deeds, bank records and correspondence show that a Kazakh family accused of laundering hundreds of millions of stolen dollars bought luxury apartments in a Manhattan tower part-owned by Mr Trump and embarked on major business ventures with one of the tycoon’s partners.
The FT said that three apartments in the Trump SoHo hotel-condominium, which he owned jointly with the real estate companies Bayrock and Sapir Organization LLC, were sold in April 2013 for a total of $3.1 million to shell companies ultimately controlled by Elvira Kudryashova, the daughter of Viktor Khrapunov, a former energy minister and Mayor of Almaty, Kazakhstan's largest city. That was two years after Khrapunov and other members of his family were charged with fraud and other financial crimes in their homeland. The FT said its reporting was backed by "title deeds, bank records and correspondence."
