Why are some people rotten?

I've had two stories approved in the past seven days. Admittedly I rushed some of the checks and relied on MS Word to check the grammar & spelling, I know this was a mistake.

As a newbie I didn't expect to be given such a rough time. The site offers the reassurance that you don't need to be a literary genius to post on the site. I guess if we did we would all be published. Yet I still received some nasty comments, which I have deleted, that were far from constructive. If they were constructive I wouldn't have a problem.

Is this the way things work on Literotica?

It's a shame as the good comments I've received have been overshadowed by the nasty ones.

Don't take it personally - you posted in Loving Wives. That is the category guaranteed to attract vicious comments that have very little to do with the quality of your work.

I scanned your story. Although you could do with shortening your paragraphs to make it easier on the eye, there were't too many glaring errors. It was more a vignette than a story, but you fulfilled the category of 'loving wife' - which is more than most stories in that cat do!

Try a different category next time and remember that you need a thick skin to post work on a public site like this. Don't give up, we've all been there. :rose:

Well, this inot only is the Internet, but it's also a porn site. Gotta expect some of this in a neighborhood like this. Sorry you're getting the raspberries, though.

And remember that your most vicious critics are hiding behind "Anonymous" so that no one can hold their brutality to task. They haven't the courage to come out and say anything to anyone's face. Just delete the nasty's unless they have something useful to say. I've left up a couple of comments from people who disliked the one story I posted in that forum but at least they explained why they didn't like what I wrote. I've gotten so many favorable comments on it that I'm actually quite pleased, especially given the caliber of the readers there. Courage, friend. Write for yourself and your friends and ignore the creeps. I would, though, choose categories carefully.

As Rach said, LW is like the back alley of Lit. I personally wouldn't submit there for anything....

I wrote a Loving Wives story so I could fill the category for the Survivor contest. It was posted today. My votes right now are in the 3.15 range, and I've received one scathing public comment: "Just another story like the thousands of others about sluts, and this one wasn't nearly as well written as the others." That helpful critic voted the story a 0. lol

I deleted the comment, but I'm rather amused by it... Fortunately, having read this board, I was prepared for that kind of response to a Loving Wives story.

Thanks everyone.

I didn't realise that the level of feedback altered by category. I will keep that in mind for any future stories.

Although I haven't posted in all the categories, my personal experience suggests that the readers in Romance tend to give the nicest feedback. There is a vast difference in the numbers of reads, votes, comments you will get from the various categories.

I found Mature good too. Plenty of feedback and votes. Not many trolls either - or not so I noticed anyway. Letters & Transcripts is a bit of a voting/reads wasteland. I still have one piece sat at 9 votes.

Be resilient ... but not hardened.

Being an artist is strange. Often, artists are very sensitive ... with a genuine desire for intelligent and aware analysis -- so they can be their very bestest.

'People' (you all know who you are) can be mean, overt pissheads. Online, they are invisible and are often insensitive to anyones feelings but their own.

Even (did I say especially?) other 'artists'.

I suggest you please yourself with your writing; first. Take criticism and chew-it-well before you digest it. You'll be fine ... . and doing something you love to do !!

(Hang in there, friend ....)

I was about to post a very similar comment. I have a lot of new stories and am a brand new writer. I have alot of very negative comments but as long as I don't read them when I'm pmsing I'm fine :) I agree it sucks though but just delete them and ignore them.

My personal rule: If it's not funny then Romance, First time or something. Avoid Loving Wives like the plague.

And the votes in humor are always good for me, but you won't get a lot of them or comments.

Yup, that's sage advice, my friend!

Hiya Drk, my friend :)

I shouldn't say this but people say I'm crazy for doing humor.

Maybe I really shouldn't have said that

Did you hear about that Jenny Jackson, the crazy girl from the Northwest who writes humor? She's really cra...

Oh hiiii Jenny! :D

Like the others have said, you have to take the good with the bad. Really. There's a bunch of assholes here we call trolls. They love to vote low on your stories and send you lousy feedback.

I laugh at them. If you get past the hate and realize most of them type with one hand and stroke with the other, you can actually feel sorry for them. Well. Maybe not.

It's the way stuff works everywhere. But you know that people who just like to criticise and complain do so because they're completely incapable of creating anything themselves. And even if they did would be too chickenshit to put it out there for other's to judge.

So assholes in other words. So when you get a comment like that you just go "asshole" and move on.

Sorry to hear you got some negative criticism. Another guarantee about this site is that most people who read the stories don't comment. Hopefully you realize that there are many more slightly more shy people who probably like your stories.

Hi HotRed69XX,

I know how you feel. There is nothing worse than someone ignoring all the hard work you put into a story and picking out a spelling or grammatical error as an excuse when to give you a 0 (especially when their comment is littered with typos). But that's just the way it is in most walks of life, there are people whose only joy is to tear others down, often because they don't have any of their own ability.

But, the flip side are the people here who will take the time to leave an encouraging message, or some helpful advice, or even a negative comment with constructive criticism that you can actually work with. Every well thought out critique is, IMHO, worth 50 abusive "can't you spell?" or "filthy pervert!" lines.

The other crumb of consolation is that if someone has taken the time to leave a comment, nasty or not, you have obviously touched them enough to stir some strong emotion. And, isn't that the point of writing?

All this, the good and the bad, will help you grow as a writer. At least that's what I hope for myself.

Many Thanks to all of you.

In all honesty I started out writing the stories for my husband. There is something very personal and erotic about my stories turning him on. He mentioned this site in a conversation once and I decided to post a couple. (This had the added advantage of turning him on even more)

I will choose to ignore them from now on I think. I'll just delete them and take heart from all of the positive/constructive comments I get.

That's usually the best and least aggravating route, yes. And don't dwell on them.

Not a writer

Im not a writer but I just wanted to say dont let people make you stop writing if you like its very easy to be critical of others but I admire your ability to put yourselves out there and respect you all for it keep writing dont let them get your goat
