How did I get here? I've asked that question to myself many times since being posted on board the USS Vireo, a fast-transport of the Colonial Marine Corps' new 'Fire Brigade' protocol against the ongoing Xenomorph threat. Many lessons had been learned from their failures and heavy loss of life. At the first sign of an infestation, a fast-transport with a platoon of Marines will be sent to the area. Armed with the latest weaponry, they will purge the threat before it festers.

But, what was I doing there? I didn't sign up for this unit. I didn't even know it existed until given the orders. When I came on board, almost the entire unit scolded me as being a boy and took to harassing me. It was like High School all over again when I got thrown into a locker. I didn't belong there, they made that known. I couldn't leave. No matter how much I wanted to.

But it had many perks, perks that seemed unattainable because of their high attrition rate. Some of the 'volunteers' were criminals, drafted into service to avoid prison. They could get years shaved off their sentences if they served for these units. If they complete a four-year stint, they could get their records cleaned and an Honorable Discharge. For those that weren't criminals, they would get their Discharge or a posting of their choice. And there was the 50% increase in pay. It was blood money. The average expectancy of a Fire Brigade member was just 6 months.

I enlisted as soon as I was old enough. Finished Basic and then found myself in this unit. I don't know how. At first I thought it was a gag, or a mistake in paperwork. Nope. I was posted on board a ship that had the highest attrition rate, but also the highest success rate of any Fire Brigade; the Vireo.

On board this ship were 30 officers and men, including myself. It was a mixture of women and men from all walks of life, commanded by Captain Max Breaker, a career officer with more combat drops than all the others combined. When I first met him, he nearly broke my wrist shaking hands he was that strong. He was almost like a stereotype, over 6' tall with a squared jaw, crue-cut hair, and munching on cigar with tattoos on his arms. His face was scared from many 'battles' and spoke at length of the many fights he was in and as many girls he's banged. He loved to yell, he loved the authority he had with these people in deep space where he could do virtually anything he wants.

There were many rumors about Captain Max, nicknamed 'Big Daddy'. Some of the rumors were, he shot a subordinate that talked back to him. He claimed it was true, though, no one on the crew saw it. Another that he ripped the head off a Xeno with his bare hands. A third was, he broke out of a Xeno hive carrying two wounded Marines over his shoulders.

Then there was his polar opposite, 1st Lt. Ellen Griffin. She was this cute, soft-spoken woman that took care of her Marines. She was a Marine through and through, though she didn't act anywhere as aggressive. When Big Daddy barked an order, she just said 'Yes, sir' and did it without any retort. But, she cared for her Marines. Unlike Big Daddy that took to staying on the ship and relaying orders through his headset, Mother, as we called her, was on the ground with us. I've seen her fight the Xenos. She's earned the respect of her Marines. So much so that Big Daddy took to spreading a lot of rumors about her behind her back.

One of them involved our synthetic Xeno named Charlie. One of the greatest weapons he had was this synthetic that looked, moved, acted, and talked the part of the Xeno. He would be sent into the hive and blend in to find missing people, find the Queens, and gather intel. When he was with us, Charlie could speak clear English. He loved to joke about and mingle with the other Marines. In his jealousy, Big Daddy spread a rumor that Charlie was fucking Lt. Griffin because she couldn't get anyone else to fuck her.

I didn't like it. I was on this ship for a month and there were signs of divide in command. That made me despair as we were tapped for another combat drop following a refit. A deep space way-station, DS-1111, had gone dark and drifted from its station off of a unnamed planetoid. It was suspected the Xenos were involved. We were heading out to get them.

We had 2 officers, 28 enlisted, one Xeno synthetic, against a station that was six times bigger than Central Park.
