Umm I fell in love with a series of stories on here and i have also contacted the writer and said she was no longer interested in writing. but im ADDICTED and would love for someone to make more stories for me... but i would have to approve your other writing... it would have to be similar to hers... I LOVE her stories. if you would like to write for me . I would appreciate it!

Before we can tell you if we'd be interested, we need to know what genre she write under, and what's her style. Could we get a link to her profile?

I just want to know the name of this series.
Are the stories hosted on this site or in links to another site?

Can't do it. Stories here are copyrighted, as are the characters in them. Without the express permission of the original author (in writing), anyone continuing the story would be guilty of copyright violation.

That's not necessarily true.
There were many versions of Robin Hood at the same time as the original, as well as after events during the official sequels.
If permission by the author is given, then it may be written within the character traits of each character.

Didn't I just say with "the express permission of the original author"?

Look up copyright law, dumbass.

I didn't see you said that.
Don't call me names!
As you pointed out, I was repeating what you said, so if I am a "dumbass", so are you.

Bless its stupid little pedo heart.

Can't come up with a better insult than that?

I've seen stories up here at lit that were unofficial continuations of other stories, said so in the foreword. They went up past the mods anyway, so I guess this could be possible.

But to get back to this case, it seem the original poster has been in contact with the author, so a written permission might actually be possible to get.

Edit: Ack! Did I really write unificial?!

Even if permission was possible, most authors won't try to write in another's style, or accept that their work must be vetted by a third party.

But, hey, if the OP can find someone to do that, WITH permission, more power to her.

As an author, I don't think I'd ever give permission for another writer to continue my stories. Some series shouldn't be continued by another author.
The continuation of Gone with the Wind, for example. A fine book, but still, not by Margaret Mitchell. Let's not even talk about Rhett Butler's people.

There are many, many stories here. You'll be able to find some others you like.

But stroke stories are not the same as published literature. If I was to stop writing here and an author with a similar style approached me, I'd consider giving him permission, if I liked his work.

What Cloudy said.

Also, you should remove your mail addy, Leigh. You are violating Lit's site rules.

As far as I'm aware (I'll be glad to be corrected) the rule is that external links and/or addresses can't be posted in stories, not on the boards as you will find any number of links in various fora.

Under copyright law, a work is copyrighted by the author at the moment of creation--doesn't matter whether it's stroke or "literature." That's the work itself, not necessarily the characters. I, however, would NOT risk continuing another author's story or using hhis/her characters without very specific written permission.

Just my 1/50 USD.

Whenever that woman stops writing those Harry Potter books it would be entirely appropriate for someone else to write some more.

Surprisingly enough, "Harry Potter" isn't trademarked in the U.S. (www.uspto.gov). That doesn't mean that it, or other characters, is not trademarked in the U.K., though.

Update: I just checked and didn't find it trademarked in the U.K., either.

HOWEVER: here's a bit of copyright law, for those who are interested:

Question: What rights are protected by copyright law?

Answer: The purpose of copyright law is to encourage creative work by granting a temporary monopoly in an author's original creations. This monopoly takes the form of six rights in areas where the author retains exclusive control. These rights are (emphasis added):

(1) the right of reproduction (i.e., copying),
(2) the right to create derivative works,
(3) the right to distribution,
(4) the right to performance,
(5) the right to display, and
(6) the digital transmission performance right.

So, I think it trying to follow-on would be hazardous at best. And remember: J. K. Rowlings presumably has more money than God, and can tie up a would-be follower-on in court for decades.

Part Four of the Site Rules:

4. You may not post personal information of other members or, for that matter, anyone else. We do not allow phone numbers, email addresses, private messages or quotes from private emails to be posted on the forum. This rule also covers real names, employment info, and any other personal information that we deem inappropriate.

And as far as I know it's always included a poster's own mail addy/phone number, etc.

How does that work in response to parody works and what precisely do you need to do to be covered as a parody?

I mean there are plenty of stories here in the celebrity charts that seem to be terribly close to the source material. Same goes for the miles and miles of fan fiction. But Anne Rice has been very agressive about not allowing fan fiction (which at this point makes her a bitch since she's sworn off writing about vampires. The least she could do for her fans is let other authers take up the mantle. I mean worst case scenario they screw up something she no longer cares about and infact regrets) so is Fan Fiction allowed because it's generally not for profit and hense it's ignored? Or is it assumed ot be legal until somebody specifies otherwise?

my understanding was that fan fiction is allowed because its not for profit. i dont know this for a fact, but it must be allowed. just look at all of it out there. FF.net has tons and tons of stories but will not display some of them if authors have expressed that they dont wish to (anne rice being one of them). but if they did, would the authors be able to go after the people who run the site?

Thats my understanding. But it could be like hentai, where for the most part the companies just sort of ignore it. It's not that it's not illegal its that they simply don't care or in some cases find it flattering.

Fan fiction is a grey area that can be interpreted different ways by the author of the original work (eg: Buffy The Vampire Slayer gay/lesbian stories), but legally (in America) the story itself and further adventures is the property of the fan who writes it, unless the characters are sold or rented for profit.
It's also illegal to defame or degrade established characters in any country, although if it is made a satire or parody, one could argue that the characters are only similar to the original source (see Youtube videos Aladdin And The Cave Of Cheeseburgers).
