I went to this around 1986 when I lived near Galveston. My mom ran a craft and quilt shop on the Strand during weekends, so I spent alot of time down there. When I went, there was only one parade and it was way too long....the riders were all exhausted by the time they got to the Strand ...

It looks as though it's really grown! I'd like to revisit Galveston sometime soon and see if it's like I remember...
If you do go, enjoy yourself for Mardi Gras....and take lots of pictures!

Come on, I know there has to be another Literotican who is going out there to play. (Ok, ok, I know that s/he might still be in bed or planning to attend a different event or day than me but...)

A friend of mine built one of the floats so my job is to take loads of pics for him.

My boy and I will be out there yelling like loons and having a ball!

"Bead me! Bead me!"

Eeeek !!!

Maybe I am anti Galveston or some thing.
But some how it always smells like rotten fish.
That Madri Gras fest ... I would not go , I went once & the people were just ... uh.... not very nice.

That is a nice way of saying it.
Did I mention the dead fish smell ?!? *ack*

I have smelled dead fish and that is not the scent that permeates the island. Salt air, the ocean--yes. Death? No.

hello Blondgirl

I used to go to Mardi Gras on Galveston Island, but I had to quit going when my boys got old enough to go themselves. I don't want to be caught by my own sons when I go a little crazy.

Besides, when you have been to Mardi Gras in New Orleans 13 times and to Carnival in Rio three times, ... Mardi Gras in Galveston just isn't that big a deal... ;)

Oh... and the last time I went to Galveston for Mardi Gras... it took three hours to get back across the bridge off the island. Stuck in traffic at 3:00 am isn't fun.

Are you going??? If so.... have fun...!!!

ick:p

As someone who lives in Clear Lake...
I see enough of Galveston when it's NOT Maridi Gras....Who wants to spend time in the Gulf of Yohoo anyway?
~silver~

The parade was great. We got a great haul of beads and a few other trinkets. The float that my friend built looked awesome and was one of the first ones out there. The crowd in our area was very well behaved. The air was very chilly but has now warmed up some. The boys had a ball jumping off the seawall before the event. I got a couple of neat pix of that.

It was a wonderful time. I might hit another parade this season.
