My computer has been acting weird all night. It won't log me in until I've restarted it and tried logging in three times, it won't show all my posts, I think it has deleted 3-4 posts for me...

Either my computer has a virus, or someone's got hold of Total Control, and is playing with me!

Watch out, another version of that bastard Blaster worm is doing the rounds. We're going through the process of scanning our machines right now.

Fucking viruses!!!

Lou

Yep, latest version of worms are trying to shut-down auto-updates to anti-virus by mimicking their 'get ready to restart the computer before new updates will work' step. Make sure you have the latest updates, make sure you have something like Lavasoft's free version of Ad-aware and run it frequently to evict the spyware from your machine (they also carry trojan horses).

-FF (if you have WinXP delete the contents from \Windows\prefetch too)

You know the name of the latest virus plauge right now?

I'm almost afraid to say it.

Well, here goes.

Ahem...

Swen

I'm sorry, but that's kind of ironic.

Sugar, that is dangerously, life threateningly ironic; that's an irony I never want to know. I'm glad you said it (vs. me). I suggest we log off and go home before Svenska sees this.

trembling, Perdita

Dear Svenska,
I hope it's only a temporary thing and that you don't have a virus. The other day I clicked on something in my inbox, and the monitor shut off. Had to reset the computer. I doubt it could have been a coincidence. Now, an unknown quantity in the inbox goes directly to the trash, then I dump the trash.

Someone who deliberately trashes someone else's computer just for the hell of it is the lowest form of life. Wellllllll...... except for someone who shall remain nameless.
Virucidally,
MG

Dear Maths,

I truly appreciate your earnest and deeply considerate response to Svenska and the modern evils of computer tampering by use of the most vile of germ warfare.

You stand tall (for such a small person) next to Gauche who merely takes the opportunity to flirt with Loulou.

with respect and admiration,

Perdita

(and harumphs to Gauche  )

I've got Norton Anti-virus, and Spybot - Search and Destroy, and I run them every week. I've re-installed IE on my computer now, and so far, it's working nicely... If the problem comes back, I'll look into those links. Thank you, guys and gals!

Oh, and Ice... *runs claws against desk* That...was...border-line... The link saved you.

Dear r,
Okay, I downloaded it. Now I'm afraid to run it. It's an .exe file. What if it has a virus? Seriously.
MG

Grisoft as far as I'm aware are a reputable company who can't afford to have their software (free or otherwise) infected with virii. Just do it. If you're unsure after you've done it try Trendmicro's housecall. an online virus detection. I use it and found it reliable.

LOL

Good one, Maths!

So, I checked my computer for the S-virus, and my computer has no such thing on it.

My computer has been behaving oddly a lot lately, especially regarding the Internet. I can't choose the Options from the main menu, I have to go through Show Security Report and Settings. Every other day, my computer changes the starting page for Explorer all by itself, and the buttons for changing it back are toned down. To switch back to my real starting page, I have to choose Program and switch back to Standard Settings For Internet Explorer... *sigh*

I tried removing Internet Explorer from my computer today, from Control Panel, Add/Remove Windows Components, and then re-installing IE. The problem is still there.

I'm gonna take this thing to school with me, and ask my computer teachers to take a look at it.

As soon as I have hidden any... "compromising" files.

Sounds like 'Adware' to me Svenska. Lit has a page to go to for treatment of such. Although i've only ever seen porn sites switch a homepage before

Gauche

That's where I found Spybot. I'm downloding this grisoft, and then we'll see if it will help...:(

It's free, it's thorough and it's saved my computer numerous times.

Raph - Be very careful with AVG. I started using that and while I was using it, my computer's performance crashes from 3.06Ghz to performing worse than my old Pentium 100. I finally took AVG off in an experiment as I played with my software to try and repair things and my comp bounced right back. Turns out AVG had brought a trojan in with it which had disguised itself from AVG itself.

I ran Norton - no infections detected. I ran AVG (from grisoft) - voilá! Trojan Horse found.

raphy, I owe you big time!
