Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? (open)

The sedan pulled up driving into the abandon warehouse and joining the small fleet of cars already parked inside, the men standing out side in the cold worked quickly pulling the massive doors shut behind them and then locking it happy to be out of the cold. The warehouse was abandoned and even though it had no heater the crew had done a good enough job setting up fires to warm up the place. Every one was on high alert today and at their best, if the rumors circling the city were true then some thing big had happened the biggest thing that had happened in the criminal under ground in a long time.

The wolf was back

“Hey Johnny” Mike said turning to his partner while they warmed their hands by the fire “you were a enforcer when the wolf was still operating in the city right?

“Ay Lass” Johnny said his thick Irish accent flowing out of his mouth “I had just came from Ireland my father was a friend of a few people high enough in the gang to get me work I never saw the wolf but I heard him enough times”

“What was he like?” Mike asked leaning in as some of the other rookies inched closer, eager to learn about the person they were truly working for.

“Organized crime in this city used to run rampant” Johnny said looking at them all “then the wolf came took over every thing until no one stood in his way he made organized crime organized arrest rates dropped and we all became a lot richer”

“So why did he get out of the city?” Mike asked looking at the others in confusion “if he was so powerful why did he run”

“Why did I run?” A voice called making them all jump and turn slowly, the sedan doors were open and a man stood studying them all his hands in the pocket of his long black coat.

He was handsome, almost impossibly so, his skin was tan as if he had just gotten back from a vacation in the Caribbean’s or some tropical place, he wore a long black over coat and it was open revealing a black and red Armani suit that was cut against his body in a way that every one could see that he was very fit, his face was free revealing a shiny bald head and strong defined features.

“You all assume I ran” He said a British accent falling out of his mouth “but why would I if I was such a success?” he asked smiling and moving towards the fire with the others.

“The answer is I didn’t run” The Wolf said patting Johnny on the back and causing the poor man to jump and back away with the others “I retired” the wolf said warming his hands and ignoring the panicked looks his crew gave him.

“I left all you capable people to run my empire while I sipped drinks in my small villa” The wolf said looking at them “so why is it that I had to go back in town because of a group of thieves?” he asked his lighthearted tone changing to a hardened edge.

“Because the thieves are using your old tricks” a women’s voice said coming out of the stripped down office, if the crew gathered looked scarred of the wolf it was nothing compared to the females voice. Most of them turned white and turned practically running as the women walked up to the fire.

“Hello sister” Daruis “the wolf” Johnson said smiling and watching the others run “still striking fear into our workers I see”

“You trusted me to run the business” Anna “The Cub” Johnson said her hard mouth finally melting into a smile as she hugged her brother “welcome back” she said squeezing him.

“Its good to see you little cub” Daruis said patting his sister on the back before letting her go “so why am I here?” he asked walking with her into the office.

“The robbers are good” Anna said going over to a fold out table and picking up some surveillance photos for Daruis to look at “they have been hitting with out asking for our permission which would be enough to take them out but they are also hitting all our businesses”

“Ever business is our business” Daruis reminded her looking over the pictures and taking mental notes.

“You know what I mean” Anna said rolling her eyes “moms business”

Daruis eyes narrowed and he put the pictures down turning to his sister and frowning, his mom ran a jewelry business before she died and Anna and Daruis did every thing they could to keep it alive and running. When Daruis became the wolf he took it a step further turning it into a large business that flourished under Anna’s care. If some one was hitting them exclusively then they knew how important it was, they were also deliberately pissing off the two most powerful people in the city.

“I want every one on this” Daruis said watching her “put teams together to sit on every place we own, they know where onto them so they probably wont attack again but Its better safe then sorry”

“I already did that” Anna said nodding “how do you want to play this?” she asked

“For now you are still the wolf” Daruis said walking to his car “I want to work the city for a while I’ll use one of my old Aliases and report to you if I find any thing”

“Okay brother” Anna said following him and stopping him “there’s one more thing at the last job they killed one of our guards your old pal Vinny’s son” she said looking sad.

“Does Vinny know?” Daruis asked turning to her and sighing.

“Not yet” Anna said shaking her head

“I’ll go tell him” Daruis said stepping into his car “be safe little cub”

“You to wolf” Anna said watching as the car rolled out.

The wolf was back in town

"Come on Mason! You can do better than that!"

Another punch landed across Nicole's face as the crowd cheered.

The crowd that surrounded the two in the boxing ring was that of a dozen or so off duty officers, both rookies and veterans. They were watching Detectives Nicole Mason and Jason Goldberg battle it out with each other, as they often did on a weekly basis. It had become sort of a tradition to watch these two partners in work, battle it out. Battle out their frustrations of the week on each other. So far, the score had been 23 to 19...in Nicole's favor of course.

When she had first suggested to Goldberg about the boxing, he wasn't up for it. He still thought of his partner as his little sister but that all changed when they stepped into the ring. From then on, Jason knew not to treat his new partner like a 'girl'. Well, at least not your average girl.

Her head whipped back around and with Jason's little cocky attitude for landing a hit square in the jaw of his partner, Nicole took that opportunity to land a 1-2 punch into Jason's chest and then the last punch, a clean upper cut to his jaw which pushed him back onto the mat...flat onto his back!

That make the entire crowd cheer again and a few groans from others as Jason didn't get up. Kneeling beside him, Nicole slapped his face a little to rouse him, "Hey, pretty boy, 24 / 19...try not to cry home to Mama about this one, OK?"

With that, she tossed her boxing gloves beside Jason and walked out of the ring. A few people gave her a pat on the back and high fives as she headed to the women's locker room. Yeah, this was a great way to release some stress.

Especially after the past few years Nicole had gone through.

She allowed her mind to drift back to that time she had lost her brother. It would actually be 3 years ago next month. The older brother she looked up to. The older brother she envied and the reason she became a cop.

Word was that he was crooked when he was killed. Nicole knew that wasn't true. She knew Andrew. He never lied to his little sister. The night before he was killed, he had told Nicole he had evidence about an inside job within the police force. Something huge. But that was all he had revealed.

To this day, Nicole would try to find out more. Only to end up at a dead end.

So, each passing year, the case would get colder and colder. And there wasn't much Nicole could do about it without some possible hard leads.

She had even put her love life on hold. Not that it was all that active in the first place. Many men were intimated by the badge. Especially those that found out they couldn't get a reign in on her and her wild ways. She was a lady but only when she wanted.

Daruis watched the city pass him by a smile playing across his face. After so much time away he was finally home back in the city he grew up in. He had never felt the way h felt about any thing like he did this town some would even say it was his one true love. He supposed in a way it was because never in his life had he felt the same way about any thing. Back in his prime he knew every inch of this city very nook and seedy back alleyway. He and his sister spent their childhood exploring both above and below ground. His rise to power began in that childhood youth after he noticed how much chaos the city was in. Crime ridden chaos with gangs and families tearing each other apart for just one piece of the pie. He saw it all even the innocent lives that got caught in the crossfire because of it. Back then he was a young idealist the kind who wanted to save every thing and every one he didn’t know if he was still one but he did believe that his organized crime was one of the reasons crime rates lowered and stayed down.

“Were here boss”

He nodded at his driver opening the car door and stepping out onto the club. The hole in the wall greeted him bringing back a whole host of nostalgia. He whistled and smiled looking it up and down even after all this time it was still beautiful seeped in grunge and nostalgia. It was here that he began taking over the city, here where he went after he committed his first robbery with his sister. They saw themselves as a brother and sister version of Bonnie and Clyde back in those days. He sighed and smiled transported back into the fond memories of those days. He tucked his hands into his pocket and went in ignoring the bouncer and the line of people waiting to get in. Under his care and eventually his sisters what was once a run down bar/ club was now one of the most popular clubs in New York City. Daruis always made sure to pay off his debts and the one he owed Vinny was the biggest one. The man was more a father to the two of them then his shit father had ever been and he was good to their mother as well.

Which made the news all that harder to break to him

He was quickly ushered in to the office which over looked the entire club. Vinny greeted him with a smile and a bear hug that surprised him. The old boxer still was a might even at 85 even if he was looking frail and small. He took the news of his sons death just like Daruis thought he would with a solem nod and two glasses of scotch.

“My son was a good man” Vinny said contemplating the amber liquid “You would have been proud of him wolf”

“I am” Daruis said looking out at the club “Even if I hadn’t seen him since he was a teenager”

“Aye it’s been three years” Vinny said looking at him closely “I cant believe this people are brave or dumb enough to hit some thing so close to your family”

“There has to be a reason” Daruis said turning to him “ some one using my old tricks and targeting my Ma’s shop no way that’s a coincidence”

“So what are you going to do?” Vinny asked “how will you avenge my son?”

“You’re going to help me” Daruis said leaning in “I’m going to start poking around quietly not as the wolf but I need a place to crash and a backstory”

“Ah” Vinny said “well the club is technically yours so I couldn’t even deny you a room if you want as for the new identity I’ll start working on it as well as putting the word out your looking for work”

“Good” Daruis said nodding and getting up “thank you Vinny and I’m sorry about your son”

“Just be careful Daruis” Vinny said reaching over and punching his shoulder “these men clearly have it out to get you”

……………

“Every one report to the emergency task force room ASAP”

The chief gathered every one pacing back and forth as he did. Once he made sure every one was in the room he shut the door eagerly turning to every one.

“Alright guys and gals listen up!” He said in his gruff voice, he was a veteran of the police force way back from the days when crime ran rampant.

“We just got some big news” Chief Butler said his eyes flashing with excitement “one of the biggest fish that’s ever swam in the sea is back in town! On of the most wanted men to ever grace the streets of New York City that’s right ladies and gentleman the wolf is back in town and this time we’re going to catch the bastard”

"What do you think about that?"

Nicole shrugged, "There have been rumors before. Nothing panned out."

"Yeah but if the chief put word out, then there has to be something there, right?"

"I honestly don't know. I mean, like I said, there have been rumors before and until I see it with my own eyes--"

"--then you won't believe, yeah yeah, I got it."

Looking at her partner, Nicole slapped a file down, "Hey, Jason, listen...you check your contacts and I'll check mine. We'll meet at Tony's later, OK?" She figured that would make him happy and keep him from pouting like he was prone to. "I'm just not ready to jump right into anything because if this rumor is true, you're going to have every cop in NY out looking for the Wolf and then what happens? You end up chasing ghosts! We need to take our time on this, got it?"

She didn't wait for his answer as she stood up and grabbed her coat, putting it on and grabbing a few case files and heading out of the precinct. It wasn't that she didn't want to catch the Wolf, it was just true about what she said. If he was truly back in town and hadn't made a big play as of today, then he wasn't going anywhere and from what she had studied up on him, he was a planner. He didn't rush into things. He wasn't stupid.

One hour later

The newly minted Thomas Whitney sat at the bar nursing his Disarona after getting his new identity set up Vinny put some feelers out that their was a new kid in town that was highly skilled and looking for work. Which meant he was playing the waiting game now until he found out more about what was going on.

He detested waiting

Daruis was a patience meticulous planner hell that’s why he was able to take control of the city in the first place but he was also impatient. He didn’t like waiting for a number of reasons both big and small. When he first started off planning heist they all ran around hi and urn tactics getting in and out as fast as possible and keeping the cops on their toes.

Much like this new crew was doing

Which meant they knew his tactics and knew what shops to target that would personally hurt him. Whoever this was who was doing it was interested in bothering him upsetting him but they didn’t seem to want to overthrow his sister.

“It doesn’t make any sense” He murmured taking a sip of his Italian Liqour “What do you want” He murmured continuing to scroll through the reports on his phone.

"Son of a bitch!" Nicole slammed the door to her car after getting in. She let her head fall against the back seat head rest as she stared up. A slight drizzle started to fall and that caused her to sigh outloud again. She had just finished talking to a street bum about the rumors and he said gave her the same answer just about every contact she had talked to today had given her. They knew nothing.

Even though no one wanted to talk, they gave her the answer she was looking for. It was all true. The Wolf was back.

Nicole looked at the time on her phone before sending a text to Jason, 'Zero luck. You?'

'Same. Meet 4 drinks?'

'No. Gonna dig deeper. Talk to you tomorrow.'

Just then, another text popped up, 'Mite have some info. Meet me @ Church & Trinity. 30 mins'

It was a realiable source, what else did she have to lose at this point?

************
There was still a light amount of rain falling when Nicole parked her Ford Escape in the first empty parking spot she came across. She made sure her gun was still in place, the shoulder holster under her jean jacket. She had pulled her hair back into a messy ponytail this morning and a few strands had come out of the tie, falling in tendrils around her face. To some, she may have looked like another common New Yorker but the way she carried herself, it was anything but ordinary.

She got the corner, forgetting to bring an umbrella, she let the rain soak her as she waited for Pete, her contact. But he was no where to be seen. She took her phone out and saw that it was still well within the 30 minutes so perhaps she was a little early.

But after 10 more minutes of waiting, Nicole knew he wasn't coming.

With a disgusted sigh, she looked around, seeing exactly what was around and saw a club. She needed to get out of the rain and just gather her thoughts so she headed into the club and saw a few random patrons drinking and kicking back. Exactly what she needed, a drink.

Going up the bar, she ordered a whiskey (on the rocks) and ran her hands over her hair as if to straighten it out and try to be presentable. Before her drink arrived, she took her phone from her pocket to see if perhaps he had shown up late, but there was nothing. Placing it back in her pocket, she down her drink and asked for another one.

Daruis was just about to order another drink when he heard the door opening. He turned noticing an attractive commanding looking woman coming in. His eyes zeroed in taking in the way she walked and carried her self as well as how damn hot she was. He was a good judge of a person and considered himself some thing of a genius when it came to people.

“Come on” Daruis said ordering another drink and watching her “Ten to one she’s in some form of law enforcement”

He waited patiently watching her closely smiling when she saw her jacket open enough to see a gun.

“Knew it” He said to himself resisting the urge to smack the bar. Well this made things interesting here he was back in town (which no doubt the police knew about) and enjoying a drink and in walks a hot cop? It was probably a hint about how dangerous the city was for him but he couldn’t help but look her up and down once more he liked what he saw. Plus she was dangerous and he would be lying if that wasn’t a turn on as well.

“Waiting for some one?” Daruis asked watching as she checked her phone and turning to watch her “I got to say a pretty girl like you definitely shouldn’t be kept waiting” He said giving her his trademark grin “especially a pretty girl who is also a cop”

Was it that obvious?! Thought Nicole as she grinned and turned to the man who had commented her on being a cop. "No, I'm not waiting for anyone, thank you, and yes, I am a cop...does that scare you?" She asked as she took another drink from her second glass of whiskey. She took it easy on the drink seeing as how she wanted a slight buzz but yet, she was driving later so, nothing heavy was needed.

Glancing over at the man who had commented on her appearance, she quickly assessed him (a hazard of the job) and although he was tough looking and handsome, he seemed...harmless. At least to her...besides having grown up with 4 older brothers, Nicole knew how to take care of herself. Although her brothers preferred to watch over her, she did a good job at it by herself.

Checking her phone again, Nicole slammed it onto the counter, face down. This was the life of chasing leads, some were good, some weren't. Some chickened out and others lied just for the money. It was a cat and mouse game, that's all. As long as it got her ahead of the game, she was willing to play it.

“Does it scare me?” Daruis said laughing and shaking his head. He supposed it should since he was a wanted criminal that she was no doubt looking for along with the rest of the cops in the city but he was good and careful enough to not get outwitted by any one.

“No not really” Daruis said scooting over to her and ordering her another scotch “I think it’s sexy” He said nudging her with his shoulder giving her a wink and taking a measured sip of his own drink.

“I’m guessing your contact didn’t show?” He noted watching as she slammed down the phone in frustration “any thing I can help you with officer” He said lightly touching her hand.

Nicole was already frustrated and when this man said something about her contact not showing, she had wanted to deck him...but she saw the smile on his face and realized he was trying to be...charming? Was that still a thing?

"Something like that." She said, shaking her head and smiling. She couldn't help but smile. There was something about the guy. Innocence maybe? Oh hell no. No man was innocent.

Charming? Maybe.

Even when he touched her hand, she didn't pull away like she would have with someone else. "So, Inspector, what's your name?" She said, teasing him.

“Hmmmmm do I have a name” Daruis said grinning and trying to not be to sarcastic “I think I do I believe every one has a name even if it’s a bad one” He leaned in taking her hand and kissing it “My name is Thomas, Thomas Whitney and you are?”

He liked her! Surprisingly he meant plenty of woman in his retirement but there was some thing about her that drew him in. Maybe it was the fact that she was a cop or maybe just the fact she was hot but he found his curiosity growing more and more with her. He made a mental note to talk to his contact at the police force and get her file. Was she on his case? More than likely but then again half the force was probably on it. To bad he bought the other half and wouldn’t be found any time soon.
