Whoa! $340 Million?

Wednesday's PowerBall jackpot is currently at $340 million.

WTF would you DO with all that money?

Funny, just answered this question the other day.

I'd buy a nice-sized ranch right outside Santa Barbara - plenty of rooms, pool, etc. - and make sure there were lots of wonderful horses for me and others to ride. Then, I'd ask all my friends that are stuck in shitty situations to come live with me. :)

I'd keep enough to keep me in style until I died, and provide a nice start for my kids.

I'd give the rest away - probably to Native organizations that need some help.

Buy a villa in Moorea, get a hammock and eat fresh pineapple all day long! :D

I would open a birth resort to give women who want an out of hospital birth the opportunity to do so, even if they live in an illegal state.

It would have a huge main house, with rooms for staff to use when on call, a large indoor, osmosis filtered pool, a wonderful kitchen staffed with really good chefs, a meditation center, clinic and teaching rooms. We would be able to host support groups, classes, and retreats for other birth professionals.

Around the main house would be about 10 (to start) cabins where birth families could come and stay around the 37 week mark (average length of pregnancy is 40 weeks) until 2 weeks postpartum. We would provide meals on the birth day and for a week afterwards. Also, we would manage laundy and have housekeeping services. The cabins would have between 1 and 3 bedrooms to accomodate most families. There would be extra dorm style rooms in case a woman wanted to have a friend/relative present for the birth but not in her space for the duration of her stay.

I would pay my midwifes and assistants well, so that they could keep learning and growing without feeling the financial burden of doing so.

It would need to be in a wooded area, but no more than 30 minutes from a hospital with a supportive staff (amazing the support you can buy with enough money...). I would also a garden area for my moms to work in, because it's important to be in touch with other growing things during pregnancy.

And paying for the ability to come to the birth resort would depend on your ability to do so - I would never turn a woman away just because she was low income.

This is a dream I've been working on for a long time - can you tell?

Share it.

What's the fun of being filthy rich if all your friends/family still have to work 40 hours a week? I'd never have anyone to play with.

help my family.
fix our love shack...
buy some land/island and build a small compoud for those who need/want a new start
donate to org's for those in dire straights.

then....i would be able to have time to drive around to old peoples homes like meals on wheels and visit with them...talk, keep them company...learn from them. theres nothing worse than being lonely in the last years of your life, i think.

Aside from the helping of family and friends, I'd buy a huge chunk of land just to have my own special little place in the woods.

I'd also buy all of McKenna's AV's, and pay her plenty of money to send me a new AV every day ;)

After that, I guess I'd just have to wait and see what I did with the rest of the money.

It'd be a pretty nice problem to have.

Buy a 2006 Mustang. I have the color all picked out :)

go on an awesome world tour with my bestest friend.

then give the rest away.

I'll see if I can't work out some kind of package deal. I'd hate to take ALL your money. ;) :rose:

I would SO love the chance to spend that kind of cash.

Logo -- LOVE your idea.

Along the same lines, I've long had this dream of starting a string of shelters in all major US cities which would provide (a) a mailing address; (b) nutritious food; (c) basic medical care; (d) job training; (e) tutoring; and (f) child care for those struggling to get on (or back on) their feet.

... all the things a truly compassionate government SHOULD provide, in other words.

You know Imp, I was playing this "what if you won the jackpot" game the other day with a friend, except I tossed in a twist: I asked which charities or organizations he'd donate to if he had that kind of cash at his disposal. Interesting to think about...

I'm totally impressed to read where folks here have thought of these things all on their own. Wonderful ideas, all of them.

That's about £200m in real money. Hmm, well, I'd use a chunk to invest in the project of a friend that's her lifetime dream. I'd set aside a chunk so that I didn't need to work. I reckon £2m in a savings account at 5% (a miserly estimate of interest!) should keep me - £100,000 a year. I'd give chunks to my friends and family obviously and go travelling. I'd give tons to a local charity which provides free counselling for young people. I'd invest £25m into my supported rugby side so that they could build their stadium bigger and better and start work on it asap. I'd offer to invest in both the RFU and the Premiership clubs, on the basis that they sat down, stopped bickering and listened to some of the suggestions about compromise. I'd give a large chunk to my rugby club so we could rebuild our clubhouse. I'd give chunks to local primary schools and colleges.

And I still don't think that'd make much of a dent. So I think I'd invest the rest and give the returns to charities.

The Earl

That's easy. Go for the twenty year payout. Take as much out in taxes as will comfortably cover me. Invest half of what's left the first year, then 3/4 of the rest for the other years. Use the half to pay off debts, buy a gas efficient car, pay back family for kindness/generosity, and quit job. Play a lot. Choose charities to donate to, based on issues I feel are most important worldwide and at home (e.g. local food pantry, state legal services for the poor, possibly ACLU or other civil liberties defense, flu vaccine research for the next pandemic).

Personally, I would rather be able to make a halfway decent living and have a loving woman in my life than win the lottery.

If I won, I would never be able to trust another person again. "What do they really like?" I'll forever wonder, "Me? Or my money?"

It's simple, Rob. You trust the folks who were close before the money came. :) Anyone else has to get past them. :D

Oh, and I'd also run off to Vancouver with Rob until he got tired of me. ;)

That might be a while. ;)

That being the case. I'd buy all the land around a lake here in Ontario. Build a cottage for each of the people I like here. Cover all their fares etc. if they come to visit, moving fees etc. if they decide to stay.

Some I would put aside, like TheEarl, to live on. The rest would go into trust funds to pay for university tuitions of kids that normally wouldn't get to go to the big important schools.

A nice quiet life is what I want, regardless of my wealth.

Become the DOG-Guy... (oppossite of the cat lady).

Spend a lot of my time telling the SO -- 'No, I'm not giving your sister more money!'

Sincerely,
ElSol

I'm just stunned that no one has offered to buy an island for Lit-togethers!

How about I rent out one of the Hedonisms... but I have a nude-only policy and insist on two girls-per-guy headcount.

ps. Since I'm paying, I don't have to be nude... but my SO will be.

Sincerely,
ElSol

I would buy an island for Lit-togethers. Come (or cum) and stay as long as you like.

Like everyone, I would donate to friends, family and select charities. I would travel to all the places I haven't made it to yet. And for myself, I would spend scads on training and do everything that I needed to do become part of one of those Canine Search and Rescue Teams. I would need an additional dog (Zoe just isn't search and rescue material, the fact that her tummy clearance is only about four inches impedes her abilities) and lots of training.
