Some people were talking about this on TV, and I thought it would make a great thread. Living my entire life in L.A., I have met remarkably few celebrities, but my first was Dash Crofts of the duo Seals and Crofts ('Summer Breeze', 'Diamond Girl').

In high school at the time, was coming out of my little corner market and saw a lady back into a car trying to leave her parking place. Being literally a Boy Scout, I took down the license plate number and started asking people in the store if it was their car. The car belonged to Dash Crofts.

What is yours (and if you live in a place where it's unlikely to meet big names, local celebrities count)?

Kevin Costner. Part of Bull Durham was filmed at my neighborhood baseball stadium. He was very nice and didn't mind little kids peeking through the fences.

When I was a kid, my dad ran a bowling alley owned by former Dodgers shortstop Pee Wee Reese. So I got to meet Pee Wee Reese.

well, i did see a woman who was a dead ringer for julia stiles in meijers once, but i highly doubt it was actually her. i mean, it's possible. they film (or filmed since they've apparently axed the tax break, so no more of that shit) stuff in michigan fairly often, but would julia stiles really be wandering around a grocery store with some old dude in the middle of the afternoon? who can say.

beyond her i (vaguely)knew the girl who was in the original pontiac aztek commercial and i got to watch my dad talk shit about a local tv news anchor while said tv news anchor stood behind us in line. yeah, my dad could be a dick at times. even as a child that shit was super awkward.

also, that too happened in a meijers.

When I was eight years old:

Several WW2 Royal Air Force people: Douglas Bader; Leonard Cheshire etc.

But the two who made the greatest impression in the same year:

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

oh, and i met a few musicians back in the day when i was in a shitty band, but fuck if i could name any of them.

I always imagined that living in L.A. must suck for women.

So many drop - dead gorgeous women coming from all over the country, and narcissistic men who objectify women…

I played pool with Clyde Drexler. It was many years ago - I was in my early mid 20s. He won. Nice guy and a good shot.

Bobby Orr & Brad Park; I was caddying for my dad and we wound up playing 18 with them at the Green Gables course in PEI.

Loni Anderson, from WKRP in Cincinati. She kissed me on the cheek and left a lipstick mark behind. I refused to wash it for days. She was dreamy.

Interesting thread idea. I was serving in Iraq and met then Secretary of Defense Admiral Mike Mullins. Ran into Bear's football coach Mike Ditka at Pittsburgh airport

My uncle was very close to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization so I got to hang out at the park in the summers quite a bit.
DiCaprio - long before he was famous - is first cousins with a good friend.

I'll just throw this in here. With the inevitable comments from my stalkers.

I was in primary school, and we had a new classmate - this shy, good looking boy who was painting beautifully. Next thing I know, we were invited to his father's birthday party and his father - a famous painter - had me sitting on his lap, was playing with my hair and telling jokes. It turned out that one of my very, very distant relatives had married a relative of his.
That's how they all were: unassuming and generous, notwithstanding their good looks and talent.
The two brothers went on to have good carriers in Arts, but they never lost that modesty.

Reported.

The rockers from Heart.

When I lived in Boston, I once played a little cat and mouse on the highway with Tom Brady. Unfortunately, my exit came up and I had to let him go.

Tom Waits and I met in the hospital nursery when we were a few days old.

The earliest I can remember offhand was Aretha Franklin in the late '80s when I was 16. Working at a supermarket that summer in Southfield, MI. She occasionally went there to shop and I lucked into bagging her groceries. Her husband was alongside her. Took the bags out to their ride, we were chattin'. Both of them were cool people, but her presence was amazing, can't ever forget that.

Might've met someone known before that, but can't recall.

There will never never be another pilot like Bader.

I do not remember much about it mainly because we were raised up with the notion that people were people.

Charles Wilson when he was a young man not sure he was a congressman yet.

My mom and dad knew him and his family growing up.

Governor John Connally.

And I worked for some Senator piling and burning brush on summer as a young Teenager.

I sure there was some other people but I don't really pay them much mind.

Oh, I ate in a Hardy's at a table next to the Dixe Chicks back in '87 I saw their van outside but I had no clue who they were.

Farrah Fawcett :)

Another celebrity lives in the village in which I practically live. My daughters are friends with his sons. They roll their eyes at me whenever I get all excited (like last fall when (insert celeb name here) chatted with me at the school open house). I keep cool, but later I geek out a bit and my kids are like, "mom. He's just a guy."
