Any dumb shit can goose the economy by ripping off future generations. Gutting environmental regulations is ripping off future generations. Running up the national debt to a new all-time high by granting tax breaks to the rich passes a huge debt to future generations. Refusing to enforce reasonable market regulations in an effective manner sets the stage for scams that future generations will need to pay for.

The problem with goosing the economy in this way is that it creates bubbles that eventually crash and cause us to suddenly think about socialism. A reasonable amount of regulation is necessary to keep capitalism on an even keel. A reasonable amount of income equality is necessary to maintain social stability.

The extreme examples of capitalism and socialism are not the answer. They each play to a simple-minded base, but neither will work in the long term.
