Who"s Following the NFL Draft

Seeing Washington trade 4 times is something you don't see very much. Bruce Allen knows his shit I'll give him that. I'm sure McNabb will end up a Viking but for what is the question. I like seeing the players from the "U" get drafted. Damn good players usually such as Devin Hester, Clinton Portis, Santana Moss, Ed Reed and Ray Lewis.

They only took him because his name ends in -mara...;) and they thought he was related.

You could have a point there.....I met Tim Mara 26 years ago on a flight to Houston. Nice guy, offered to get seats for me and some buddies. I told him we already had them. Astrodome....singing Houston Oilers Houston Oilers Number 1.....something like that....think Bum Phillips was still the coach back them. Remember we won....year before the 87 Super Bowl win...good memory.

Hey...I'd be inclined to root for the Giants just for their connection to Kate Mara.

Well, as expected, it tanked after the first two picks. Not only that, that fourth pick that was the bone of contention with the Ravens mysteriously disappeared, and espn.com doesn't have a report about it.

No matter. There's always next year's draft to screw up.

Even as a big NFL supporter, i just dont get the draft  Why cant there be transfers like every other sport? :D

The theory behind the draft is that it encourages parity in the league. To use baseball as an example, it used to be that certain teams, mostly the Yankees, Dodger and Giants -- when all three were in NYC -- were able to monopolize the best talent because it could outpay the other teams in the league. It had the most resources, so their scouting staffs could find talent more easily and readily than teams in Pittsburgh or Washington, for example. This led to such disparity that for years, certain cities' teams would never be able to compete for the championship and instead served as feeder systems for the richer teams. For example, in the decade prior to the MLB draft, of the twenty potential slots in the World Series, fourteen were filled by teams in NYC, with five of the ten World Series being all NYC affairs and one -- the 1959 LA Dodgers -- winning one year after relocating from Brooklyn. The first MLB amateur draft was held in 1965.

But using the draft with the weaker teams picking before the teams with better records, the theory is that the lower teams would get the better talent. Different sports have different rules for their drafts. But they're all designed to even up the competitive abilities of the league teams.

We have trades. We have trades involving draft choices and other players. But if you had no drafts, richer clubs would be able to pay more to stockpile more talent and keep it away from other teams, creating situations more conducive to keeping a few teams in contention year-in and year-out and other teams barely able to stay in the league financially.

Actually I would say among the four major leagues in North America the draft system is a staple.
I am not sure how a transfer system would work in the NFL since the initial identification of player talent and player development is occurring at that college level, which is theoretically independent of the pro leagues giving large market teams an unfair advantage without really putting in any investment (like what happens with your European football clubs).

I'm a fan of the bucs. They picked up 2 defensive lineman with their first 2 picks...which is exactly what they did last year. If they can pull out just 2 decent lineman from those 4, I'll be happy. But Gerald McCoy's last season doesn't make me too hopeful.

Btw, I like what the Colts did solidifying their offensive line and adding more of a bruising running back...liked what the Bengals picking up AJ Green (Go Dawgs!) and Andy Dalton and finally turning the page on Carson Palmer who has been living off what might have been since his injury against the Steelers...and I think the Falcons gave up too much to get Julio Jones especially with their deficiencies on the DL and LB corps...:D

Do you think Da'Qan Bowers' knee will be able to hold up?

Crazy draft. Ponder to the Vikes? Locker to the Titans? How does Gabbert fall past those guys? Never thought Ingram would drop that far. Patriots are up to their old tricks. Jimmy Smith to the Ravens was a steal for them. Hoping Rudolph drops to the Rams in the 2nd.

Oof. This post did not hold up very well. I guess Gabbert is still in the league kinda
