Who lost Biden's agenda? Democrats offer competing theories for failure of 'Build Back Better'

WASHINGTON — Maybe the Build Back Better Act was destined to fail.

Maybe the White House and Democratic leaders misplayed what could have been a winning hand, even if it had no margin for error, and jeopardized the centerpiece of their agenda.

Or perhaps rank-and-file Democrats, coupled with unanimous Republican opposition, gummed up the deal-making process in a way that Joe Biden the candidate said he was uniquely suited to surmount, but in practice as president could not.

In conversations with more than a dozen people involved with the legislation, conflicting theories emerged about who is responsible for President Joe Biden’s lost legislative agenda. The enduring tension looms over quiet discussions between the White House and congressional Democrats on a dramatically scaled-back bill, with finger-pointing about who’s to blame for the failure of the larger bill amid uncertainty about what, if anything, might actually pass ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Stonewalling Republicans are responsible for the failure of nation-developing legislation to pass. (Was this a trick question?)

What a dumb article. Democrats did not have enough political capital to steamroll Bidens agenda. They passed the infrastructure plan and will pass a few minor parts of the agenda before midterms.

Nothing sucks about that and nobody should be upset about not having everything passed.

Well, some things do suck about it.

Which minor parts will pass?

It wasn’t just Brandon’s BBB that cratered. The elections bill was another other big part of Brandon’s agenda that failed to pass.

Last time I checked Joe Manchin is a Democrat that has been endorsed by the Democratic party for years and years. But I don't expect Democrats to take responsibility for their failures. They never do.

Democrats have been so cucked they've been taught to expect and accept failure as standard operating procedure. "Don't get upset because Republicans always win and Democrats always lose. It's just the way the world works."

I understand politics more than that. There is no such thing as getting everything of what you want in Washington. I'm happy with what we've gotten done and I'm confident more legislation will be passed this year. Neither party ever always wins or always loses....that mentality is dumb.

I take it you have healthcare and not one of the 45,000 Americans that needlessly die every year. Good for you.

Lol....if we didn't have things to work toward, we'd never work towards anything.

Good luck with that

Per NYT on 2/15,

“Ron Klain, the White House chief of staff, said the targets for the next several months included a bill to support American innovation and the semiconductor industry, and funding requests to battle the coronavirus and continue sending weapons to Ukraine.”

Holy “Honey I Shrunk My BBB.” What started as a massive agenda aimed at climate, new social entitlement spending programs, tax code changes, and election regulation been has been reduced to minor legislative goals that have nothing to do with anything that was ever in Biden agenda.

Ha ha ha. That's so funny! Great jokes! You should try them out on the parents of dead children when attending a funeral of someone who died a needless death.

Having diabetes could be labelled as a choice of the parents to feed junk food to their kids, or as a choice of junk food manufacturers to poison the nation.

Radical rapid change is the rhetoric of campaigns.

Realizing rapid radical action is the bane of the elected politician.

It's one thing to talk about change, but most-likely career-ending to act upon it because
it leads to opposition counter rapid radical change rhetoric
which could be unseating...

Blues(D)river, the exception never proves the rule,
but it does provide fodder for the small mind...

Yeah, Republicans like Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema need to be voted out of office for their obstructionism.

None of it will pass if it includes more deficit spending. Manchin has already drawn the line on that. As has Sinema.
Yep. Brandon’s own chief of Staff essentially said last week that the agenda for the rest of the year will be focused on small ball items (semiconductor industry aid, Ukraine, Covid) that were never in the BBB bill. Even the $10 billion in additional Covid spending the administration is seeking (a pittance in proportion to the trillions already spent) will have to come from money previously appropriated by Congress.

Perhaps you're right. We shall see. You righties celebrate those two as if they were Republicans. They are Democrats.
