Who has done the low carb thing?

I did/do

Ambro helped me with it when I first had questions.... lots of other people around me have done it too

It's a "great" (some people say not so great) way to lose a few pounds rather quick.... if you are determined to stick with the program.

One of the most important things to remember tho is to take your vitamins, it'll help your enegery level to stay up. And if you have any sugar problems at all.... be very careful.

Oh, it's some diet thing

I thought she was asking about how to increase fuel flow to her carbeuretor.;)

It is a sort of fuel thing but it has nothing to do with what is in my truck.

SK, please tell me about yoru successes--I am not much of a meat eater and I really don't like cheese--how do you avoid the tediousness?

Anybody else?

Been doing it since Feb., and have lost 20 lbs, and 3inches off my waist. The best help that I found was Lauren Gillespie's Gladiator Diet She wrote seperate books for pre and post meneposal women. A medical Dr. she teaches you about why the low carb diet works, the biochemestry behind it, and all that stuff, so that you be proactive in making it work. You can find out more at gladiatordiet.com which has links to sites for the other books.

Updating--for anyone who cares

I have been doing this lo-carb thing for almost 2 weeks now and I must say that I am very impressed with the results so far.

When I got on the scale a couple days ago, my weight had not changed. But I am not obsessing over that.

Other issues
1.) Got my period on Tuesday and the Zit Monster decided that I did not need any of his art work. First time ever for that to my knowledge.
2.) I can think better--I am not going around with mud-brain. This is the best. I am now drinking my coffee for pleasure, not just the caffeinne.
3.) I went out to a pizza party last night and lo-and-behold--I did not feel deprived or insatiable. I ate the toppings off one piece and decided that I would stop for burger innards later if I was still hungry. No problem.
4.) I am more energetic.
5.) I am sleeping better.
6.) I am awake better too.
7.) My face looks different--I am not sure if it is fat loss or what, but it looks different and people are commenting.
8.) My moods are better--I don't think I yelled at my kid this whole week--we talked about it and he likes me this way.
9.) The depression is better. I made calls this weel to seek professional help but now I feel so much better that I am wondering if I should wait and see if a lot of my depression was a food allergy symptom or something.

This is great.

Oh yeah--and I am not hungry--I have never felt better on a diet than I did when eating like the typical American or vegetarian. this time I DO feel better.

Today is Anniversary Sunday at my Baptist Church. You all know what that means...CHURCH LADY FOOD!!!!!
This will be interresting--first year I won't be attacking the strawberry shortcake that somebody makes that is to die for! Or who knows, Maybe I will! LOL

I've tried the atkins thing once and even though you can lose weight quickly, I don't think it is healthy. If you have access to a gym, I'd go with the body for life program. On the diet side of it, you eat 6 meals a day except one day a week when you can eat anything you want. You eat a fist sized portion of protein and carb with every meal, and a veggie with two of the meals. The carb list is fairly restrictive, only complex carbs like brown rice and potatoes. There are shakes you can substitute for meals also. You can order the book, or pick it up at most bookstores. I think it's sold about 2 million so far.

But you have to do the weight training (3 days a week) and aerobics (20 minutes 3 days a week) that go along with the program.

If you do the low carb diet and nothing else you are losing muscle along with the fat.

My doc put me on Protein Power. its another low carb high protien diet. I eventually quit, but it did work.

A few months ago, I started going to a place called Curves for Women. Its a 30 minute workout which combines strength training and aerobics.

The last week of July a bunch of us started on a similar low carb high protein diet. I've lost a total of 16 pounds and about 17 inches since I started :D I've been able to stick with it this time and I'm really happy with the results. Working out helps alot, it builds muscle and makes you look smaller.

The only problem is that I have to eat about 6 times a day, its a metabolism building thing. The more you eat the more you lose I guess.

Heres a link if anyone is interested. It takes almost no time to work out, and I go about 4 times a week. And its FUN too. I never thought I'd say that about exercise LOL

I go on this diet periodically just to lose a few pounds here and there....but I feel all the other benefits too, just like BlondGirl said.... Getting up in the morning is not impossible.....sleep is much better and more rewarding....clear headedness...the list goes on.

I hear alot of people say how unhealthy it is, but if you take vitamins and drink lots of water, you'll be fine.
As for the loss of muscle argument, taking Chromium can help with that. Or just getting off your bum and exercising a bit......

The main thing for me is that if I'm not on this diet I eat shit....fast food, hot pockets.......potoato chips...just junk. So is atkins better for me than a real balanced diet w/exercise? No, probably not. But it is leaps and bounds better for me compared to what i normally eat...

Good lucK BlondGirl.... ;-)

There is a good book on the market called Food and Mood...I posted the link to the book on Amazon below...This may explain why you feel better when your not eating certain foods or when you do. I've read parts of this book and it goes in-depth. She also has written another one on Nutrition and Women, also a good book...also in-depth. Possibly worth a glance...

My only warning with high protein diets or special diets in general is that if you stop your likely to regain all the weight that you lost. Are you willing to stay on this indefinately?

My opinion is that your time and energy are better spent working on a sensible food plan and exercise/weight training. Easy to say, hard to do but for the long haul it's more liveable.

Best Wishes with whatever path you choose!

Obviously the "sensible food plan" has not worked for me. LOL I was even a vegetarian in college (reason? my budget). That is as healthy as it gets, right? NOT!

I lived on carbs before 2 weeks ago--I have always done this--breads and grains were the mainstay--regardless of the rest of my life.

Now I am trying this. If it worked for the ortho surgical doc team, then I am not concerned about "risks".
Besides, the more I think about it, the more I wonder how natural it is for us to live of processed grains at all--How many cultures in society lived mostly off processed carbs in history?

This lo-carb diet is high on meats and vegetables and low on fruits and sweets. Easy to do and to feel satisfied on.
And my sugar cravings are in control.
So are my bread cravings--a major difficulty in the past.
I am happy so far.
