When I went to school we weren't even allowed slide rules. We were issued with log tables.

Edited: And our exercise books had the times tables on the back cover along with various units of measurement such as Troy Ounces, Bushels, Pecks, (Rod, Pole, Perch - the same unit with differing names in parts of the UK), Chain, Gills and Quarts.

It was long, grueling, satisfying and I used it for actual problems zero times.

My high school geometry/trig teacher spent a couple of weeks sort of off-curriculum just drilling us in the use of a slide rule, even though he conceded its practicality was already pretty questionable.

I think it was green on the ends, but mostly white.
