I assume you specified "externally encouraged" to indicate that you are not talking about erotic dreams that stimulate you from within your own mind. I don't know the scientific answer to your basic question, but I think you could still reasonably use the story situation you are implying. "Asleep" and "awake" are not a true dichotomy; they are more like the two extreme ends of a spectrum. I believe that you can be mostly asleep, but still awake enough to notice and respond to external stimulation such as a nice mouth sucking on your cock.

In response to the OP's questions regarding the possibility of a sleeping person of either sex being "encouraged" into partial or even full arousal, I guess it the best answer I have is that it depends on the individuals concerned. I can say from personal experience, however, that the answers can most definitely be yes.
