I'm curious.
Suppose you had to give up one of your five senses, which would you choose to live without, and why?

I would give up my sense of hearing, I could do without all the noises in the world. I could not do without the sight of a beautiful sunset, the smell of fresh baked cookies, the taste of strawberries and cream or the feeling of my lovers flesh under my fingertips. :)

Taste. Because I just don't see it affecting my daily life as much as the others if I were to loose it.

Sense of balance, that way I could have people hold me allllllll the time :)

I am with Ren. Taste isn't that important to me.

I'd be nothing without my sight, or hearing, and who in their right mind would be willing to loose their sence of touch.

The trick is, take away taste, and even with your smell you can still enjoy food as you eat. :D

No real losses then.

Well, I'm already losing my sense of vision, so can I just give that one up? I know how to function without it. :D

Seriously tho, I think I would choose my sight anyhow. I can handle that one, but I don't want to miss the taste of my lover's kiss, the smell of his body, the feel of him against me and the sounds of his pleasure and passion.

I thought long and hard about this one.

Taste. *shrugs* I would miss peppermint chocolate but could live with that.

To not be able to see my children or hear their voices?

Thank you all for the great replies.
I guess I would go with taste also, I would sure miss chocolate though. I can't imagine life without music, so I know it wouldn't be my hearing.
Dixon, I think that would be a sensibility, rather than a sense. :)
sd412, what a great idea!

I couldn't lost my sense of touch - I live to feel the warmth of my nephew's hugs:) and the feel of my love,

I couldn't live without my eyesight - I must see the faces around me, live to be inspired by the sights of nature

I couldn't bear to lose my hearing - how could I live without my music?

I couldn't live without my sense of smell - so many scents to soothe, arouse, stimulate the soul

So taste it is for me - Food is merely for sustanance - all the rest feed the soul:D

My sense of smell is gone from years of allergies. It sucks. Not just for the pleasures of scents that I miss, but also your sense of smell can be a wonderful warning device. I'm always on the lookout for smoke in the house, because I wouldn't smell it. I check my stove constantly, because I wouldn't smell the gas. I have to do visual checks on my babies' diapers.

So, I already gave one up. Don't want to contemplate another.

If I had to go without one it would probably be my sense of smell.

I could never part with hearing, I love music way to much. And I really don't think I'd be able to handle being blind. Taste is very important, I know when I get a bad cold and I can't taste anything I eat I feel so odd because I recognize the texture in my mouth but without the taste it's just...weird. Touch is really important for obviously day to day functions. So smell it is.

say bye bye to Smell

:p

Starfish is exactly correct on this one. Taste is actually approximately 2/3 smell. Plug your nose and eat something and you will agree.

Smell is also the number one subconscious trigger of memory, both short and long term. If you didnt have it you would miss it much more than you think.

I would give up taste, without hesitation.

I would have great difficulty without any of the others, especially sound. I would go insane(short trip).

I would have to go with smell:

I couldnt live without hearing music

I couldnt live without being able to see natures beauty, or reading (audio books just arent the same for me)

I like food way too much to not taste---hey maybe that could be a good diet aide...hmmmmm i may have to consider this.

And there is no way I could live without touching.

Yah that sounds like fun don't it? Fuck no. Belive me trying to stand on one leg all day is no fun. Needing people to hold you or lean onto if standing too long, falling and grabing the person next to you out of instinct.... then pulling them down with you.

Me i think i'd go with tast, i'd die if i could not see all the world around me. i'd go crazy with no hearing... the silence ahhhh. smell... okay i guess i could give that up but if you have no smell you have no taste so both are gone. and feel... I need to feel mentaly emotinaly physicly so taste out you go.... now i can eat all those foods i hate :D

i found these comments very interesting

i know so many people that have lost one or more of these. each one found that what they lost did not deter from their lives. on the outside looking in, it seems like such an easy decision for one or the other. well, maybe not, but when faced with adversity we humans have an amazing ability to cope.

for me though, i could lose my sight, at least i could still enjoy hearing my favorite tunes, someone whispering in my ear, etc....

or...

i could lose my hearing, at least i could enjoy sunrises, sunsets, veiwing the great pics here, etc...

or..

lose my smell/taste, i could still see hear, etc...

ok, it all just matters how we look at life, ok i'll get off my soapbox, lol

it's all good

happy turkey day!

This is a very interesting question and I suppose I would give up the ability to tase stuff. Since I am a picky eater this would make everything flavorless so I could eat anything without worrying about taste.

I could live without a sence of smell.
I would install a gas detector, Smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide detector and I think I would be OK.

Then what about common sense? Plenty of people get by without it.

Sesnse of deceny? Sense of being? Sense of belonging? Conscience?
