Which of the stories below is true and why? I'll tell you the answer tomorrow - maybe - if you are good children and play nice.
STORY ONE
When I was 22, I set off with a group of Aussies and two New Guinean guides to walk the Kokoda Trail which was so significant in Australia's tussle with the Japanese in WW2. However, the trail had long become overgrown. Our guides became lost, we couldn't find any of the villages we planned to shelter in and we actually had to make our own bridge (from logs) to get across one river. In the end, after a week of fruitless wandering, the Australian army had to find us and rescue us by helicopter. We had actually travelled in circles and had only gone five miles. It was in the Aussie papers and proved most embarrassing.
STORY TWO
When I was 14, we were travelling in North Queensland during the summer floods. We came to one swollen river where even the semi-trailers had stopped trying to go through. The rate at which the river was rapidly rising meant that we would be stranded for days or weeks. Our car was pretty old. Finally, a truck decided to try and make it through. My mother who was in her mid-40's insisted that my father follow in its wake. Halfway through, the car stalled. My mother made myself and my brothers climb out in the raging waters and push the car. She then climbed out in her underwear (sagging, yellowing bra and equally sagging white bloomers). We somehow got the car across. I think my brothers and I were extra determined because of the embarrassment of having dozens of truckies stare at our mother in her less than finest.
