Last year was suppose to be the year of "Submission Frenzy!" I was going to submit poetry everywhere. Well, last year is gone, and there was no frenzy. So this year is going to be the year of "Submission Frenzy!" Maybe. :D

Okay, I'm submitting one poem to one place, and I'm wondering about bios. I actually have poetry at quite a few places, to my surprise. I'm guessing I don't list them all in my bio. What do you do? Do you list only the best or all of them? I know including literotica isn't a good idea, and I've never included it in the past. Sorry, lit. Tacky to include my own site? Anyone know about Net Poetry & Arts Competition (NPAC)? I won medal there a few years ago. Is that a cheesy site or something respectable? I really don't know.

good luck with the frenzy! I expect to see many tooting of your own horns down there in that thread.

use Mannequin Envy, for absolute sure :)
tacky to use your own site as a publication credit, but not as "editor of Eve's Habit"
Yes, use NPAC
You were featured at Lotus Blooms, right?

Often times, the publication will have certain requirements for the bio-- like the last three publications, etc.

Lately I have been not including any specific publications in my bio unless requested. I will say something generic like- her poetry and photography have been published on-line and in print. You can find more at: www.xxxx xxxx.com. I often put a list at the bottom of my submission, underneath the poems, because I do not believe that a person should or should not be accepted because of their publication record (I will contradict myself in about 3 sentences)

Editors are a weird bunch. They have picky preferences -- some say things like- we don't want to know where you have been published, we are not impressed blah blah.
As an editor, every now and then, I like to go see other samples of people's work especially if they are on the border between rejection and acceptance. If they are underpublished, I will use that to in the discussion with our poetry editor, because it is exciting to promote artists who are not recognized for their talents yet... it is one of the reasons I started my site.... or if they are published everywhere under the sun (submission whore or what I like to call shot-gun submissions) and they sent us something not up to their usual standards that they sent to 100 other zines randomly without even checking out the site, then poof, into the rejection bin wit' ya! eh hem.

Eve- I would suggest that you definately include your site, absolutely. I am always more interested in reading something unique about the person in their bio, not a list of where they have appeared. If people want to find more of a person's work, all they have to do is google them.

Surely, include everything you have done, the awards etc, but individual publications do not need to be in the formal bio section of your submission, you could put it in a separate paragraph.

50 words is a good rule of thumb. Long bios are annoying and pretentious, but I did not say that.

Why are you only sending one poem? Is that the requirement? I would suggest you send more for a number of reasons.

Good luck! Keep us informed over here, we are rooting for you!

ps of course this is just my opinion, which is not necessarily standard. I like to read other people's bios--- what kind do you like?

ps when I do include individual submissions, I put the ones I am most proud of, for whatever reason. Not always the most difficult to get into. I am in some publications that are hard to get in, but are tacky as hell filled with ads and I wish I never sent them my work.

some people have a standard bio that they use for all of their submissions, which saves time. I am an inefficient fool and usually write new ones when I submit, which takes forever, it is ridiculous.

Here's what I have so far:
Donna Dixon lives in a valley in Virginia with her two daughters and the neighbor's cat. Her work has appeared at Erosha, mannequin envy, no troy, NPAC, Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, and other ezines. She has also appeared in print in Barking Dogs Poetry Journal.

I'll add Lotus Blooms. I like editor of eve's habit. Didn't think of that approach. How about 4 hour hard on? It's a blog, but that doesn't matter, does it?

I left out some of the list:
eve's habit, Erosha, mannequin envy, no troy, NPAC, Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, Lotus Blooms Journal, 4 hour hard on, Erotic Readers and Writers Association, Barking Dogs Poetry Journal, Coming Together Katrina Hurricane Relief Anthology, Justus Roux's Erotic Tales, literotica.

I'm trying thieves jargon and zygote/coffee first.

They will be lucky to have you!

Definately include Eve's Habit-- designs, creates, edits Eve's Habit poetry and art journal and forum....Don't forget to add you are an artist too! And an entrepeneur (although you should spell it correctly :) )

And maybe a pic in that hot pink bra, too. That would get you into my journal. Of course, my journal is a scrap of napkin in my wallet.

It varies. I'll mention a few but I don't want to clog up the bio with names of publications, unless they ask for a comprehensive list, of course.

I'm wearing old pinkie right now. I'm adding that to my bio.

Here's the neighbor's cat that I mention in the bio: http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=1617816
I think the neighbor wants fluffybell back, but it's not going to happen!

Wow, that makes me sounds interesting! :D I'm editing the bio now.

eve

I mention the publications I'm most proud of, the poems I'd like people to read and try to keep the list down to three or four because I don't want to overwhelm in my bio. I agree that you should say you are the designer and editor of a poetry site and provide a link. That's impressive. Well, it is to me. :D

It's better than me saying, "I have accepted my poetry at my site."

Donna Dixon lives in a valley in Virginia with her two daughters and the neighbor's cat. She is the editor and creator/designer of Eve's Habit Poetry and Art Journal and forum. She is also an entrepreneur, photographer and artist. Her work has appeared online and in print: Erosha, Mannequin Envy, No-Troy, NPAC, Dead Mule, Barking Dogs, and other online poetry journals and print publications.

I took out lotus blooms since they are no longer online. Should I cut the mule? (that sounds funky. lol)

Well you're not linking to the Mule (cause you can't), but I don't see why you can't mention it. I was published in Exquisite Corpse two years ago and granted they're still around, but I mention it because I'm proud of that poem and proud I got in there.

How cool is that! Was there a medal ceremony or anything? Did you get to sing the Nat'l Anthem while the camera zoomed in on a single tear curling over your cheek?

I'm really hoping she'll post an AV that features both the medal and the pink bra...

hmmm if I had photoshop I would work on that for you, instead I think I will write a poem about a bluejay eating the guts of a baby bird. Hopefully I find some external meaning to tie it to.

Don't make me get out the "big" swatter.
I didn't really get a medal that I could touch or wear or anything niffy like that.

niffy?

Well, now that I've put everyone through my bio insanity, I have to say that I can't find a poem to send. I hate them all. I hate my face. I feel like eating a cheeseburger and crying my left eye out. (I'm going to use that in poem)

what is a Poetry Ambassador?

Let me guess. Poetry.com or National Library of Poetry or one of their other names?
Art, are you one of the thousands of ambassadors? Just don't part with your money.

Submit your poetry here or check out the thread for submission calls. Don't bother with poetry. com (and its other names) We've had many threads over the years about these guys.

is that the place that offers to publish your award-winning poetry for you, along with other poets and then charges you for publishing? i read about it on the 'net somewhere.

oh wait, this is the 'net too.

oh heck, it's one of those days, isn't it?

i am such an idiot. lol
