OK, this is a really random question, but I need it answered for my Valentine's entry... the knuckle of your finger that is closest to the fingernail - is that the first knuckle or the third?

As far as I can remember, there is only one row of joints called the knuckle, and that's the one that becomes prominent when you make a fist, along the back of the hand, I usually call the others just joints.

So the one nearest the finger nail would be the first joint. Then the middle joint, then the knuckle.

That help??

Mat's right. The knuckle is considered first, however. The bones of the fingers, the phalanges, are in three rows and start at the proximal row (nearest the hand), go to the medial row, and then the distal row (fingertips.) When learning about the human body, you always start with whatever is closest to the midline of the body and work your way out.

Wheeeee. I learned something in Human Anatomy:)
