Which is it?

Sheckystiller,

I got the same problem with one of my stories, exception there's no "rejection", just a "approval pending". I don't know if there is a waiting period for stories to be approved/rejected or what, but I've scratched my head trying to get my brain around it. I've PM'ed one member on here to get a better idea of what's going on, but still no response.

The only advice I could give is to keep doing what you're doing and maybe you'll get lucky--that's the only explanation I could come up with.

Sheckystiller:

"It's all returned"? So was the story accepted or rejected? I'm confused.

I know threads are easily approved, but I think the process to get an actual story on chyoo is a little hazy. Something to do with the Karma system?

Anyhow, it'd be nice if a CHYOO veteran could chime in and give some perspective--I know I'm grasping for straws here.

Okay, sounds like someone read your stuff, they just think it could be improved.

Any chance we could see a link to your story so we can get a better idea of what they are talking about?

Sheckystiller,

Looks like you should take this up with Rayne2--they're the editor, and if they've locked it I'm sure it's for a reason. Check and see if you can reach them via email and PM and see what the big deal is about, I'm sure they could explain why that's so much more than I can. There's a dialog box at the bottom of his profile--send a quick message explaining your situation and see what happens. The worst that could possibly happen is he'll say no, but I don't think that will happen quite yet.

Hmm...

I guess the only thing you can do at the moment is watch and wait. Either they'll get in contact with you or they won't. I know that sounds fatalistic, but it's all you can do at the moment.

It's great to see new writers contributing to CHYOO--I know the system can be a bit annoying to get used to, but I hope you'll stick around. It's not so bad once you've played around with it a little.

The normal setting for a story is that the editor (usually the story creator, unless someone else has taken it over) gets to approve all new threads. Other people can see your thread while approval is pending, but you/they can't add on new threads until it's approved (there is actually a way around this, explained in one of the CHYOO Tricks threads on this forum). As you mentioned, threads that haven't yet been approved are listed differently on your own page. If the story editor promotes you to "trusted" status for the story, all your threads are automatically approved as soon as you submit them.

Shecky, your thread looks pretty good to me, but it may not match Rayne2's style, in which case you may need to do some editing before it'll be accepted. I think one way to make your thread even better would be to speed up the dialogue a bit. I think you're spelling things out a bit too much, which slows down the scene. Your characters and readers can both catch on quicker than you're letting them.

Also, as far as getting your own stories approved: it has nothing to do with the Karma thing (Karma has actually always been broken on the site, it doesn't ever build up). Just start a new story, add a few threads to it to show what it's all about, and one of the moderators will approve it. Sometimes it may take up to two weeks for a moderator to get to it if there's a backlog, but they're really good about moving through the queue. I've never had to wait more than a couple days to get one of my stories approved.

I hope that's helpful. I'm happy to answer any other questions you have about getting used to CHYOO.

A] I've been told that I didn't "spell things out enough" before, so maybe I did err a bit too much on the other side this time.

Yeah, I think it's a tough balance to strike. I struggle with it a lot in my writing too.

B] I've thought of a few things that might be the problem, but I click on the thread in the story map, & am unable to edit it.

One of the options that a story editor gets to choose is "Allow authors to edit their threads." This is turned off for the story you added to, which means you can't edit your thread once submitted. I personally always turn this option on for my stories, since I find it really fucking inconvenient to be unable to tweak threads once they're posted. Drives me crazy.

Anyway, maybe ask Rayne2 if she's willing to turn that on so you can improve your thread? Otherwise you'll have to submit a second thread and have Rayne2 reject the original.

Mememe621,

Thanks for your insight. I know it can be confusing getting used to writing stories here. Your explanation of the Karma process was very helpful.

Can you explain the difference between getting a thread approved and getting a story approved? I know my threads are approved for a story I'm working on, but it still says approval pending when I look in the "stories" tag in My Home. I assume either there's a backlog, or there isn't much interest from the mods.--MJ10

A story is approved by a moderator. How many are active at the moment I'm not sure. They don't work for the site as such, but were simply CHYOO writers who were given certain admin capabilities. They can approve stories or give abandoned stories to someone who wishes to take it over.

Once a story is approved the writer who submitted it gets to approve or reject threads added to it. They can choose certain criteria for giving writers trusted status at which point threads added by that writer will be automatically approved. The submitting writer can also edit threads before he or she approves them. Correcting spelling or grammer errors or changing details which they feel don't fit in with their concept of the story.

Thanks for your reply Androd1966. That was very helpful.

Sheckystiller,

Just out of curiosity, is the adopt-A-Story program still ongoing? I don't see many people posting on the thread over there. I'm considering maybe helping out with one (after I'm done with my own story) and just wanted to know what's going on.

MJ10

Yeah it's an ongoing thing, just post in the thread if you want to take over a story (within reason of course).

Give the guy a break, he's doing his best and given his recent silence on the forums we can only assume real life has thrown a spanner at him. He'll get things sorted when he can.

Just let me know

I check in at least once a week. Just let me know what you need and I can shift things around for you.
