Which country is the greatest threat to the continued appeasment of despotism?

The "greatest threat to World Peace" thing has been in the news a lot lately, with the U.S. winning all the polls, but I see it as a loaded question lacking perspective. Without the U.S. tramping its soldier boots all over the world, what would the world look like, and continue to look like?

p_p_land.

You didn't say it had to be a real country.

Okay, okay,

The European Union.

Good point, Storm.

I want to change my answer to p_p_land and Illinois.

you weren't here for a drawn out discussion, you want someone to validate your opinions and so posted a leading question.

You're being an overly-earnest, nuance-free idiot, CB.

Illinois is too mid-western, too stolid. Maybe New York. South Carolina for sure.

Good point, Hanns.

I want to change my answer to Hanns_land and Illinois.

The French piss me off to no end. For a quick perspective on just how good of an 'ally' the French are, read about the Phony War in the 1940's that they staged while a key ally (Poland) was being overrun by Germany. Despite the French outnumbering German forces badly along the Maginot line, they sat in their steel structures, that would later become their tombstones.

I’m from Illinois, when I launch my coup-de-ta to seize power you beeoches had best believe that the Illinois National Guard soldier’s boots will be stompin’ all over you’re candy asses! :D

I must not be understanding the question, which asks which country is the "greatest threat to the continued appeasement of despotism."
It's a tie between England and the U.S.
France is leading the appeasement charge — with their hands held up.

Many thanks DCL. You haven't gotten a serious answer yet. I wonder why?

Whatever, CB.

---------------

After listening this morning to the speeches at the U.N. from delegates happy about the progress made by the weapons inspectors, it occured to me that the only reason there are weapons inspectors in Iraq to make progress is because there are 200,000 American, British and Australian soliders two feet from the border.

In the 20th and 21st centuries? France.

I'm not sure who I'd put there before then. I don't believe there were many places in the world where it was possible to be an appeaser and still remain an independent nation.

Britian, speaking before the U.N., just made this point, saying that the progress made is due only to the threat of force.

While techincally true you have to understand that the French did this for a reason. (I'm not defneding them just pointing out why they sat there and did squat.) Their army was badly outdated. While the Germans had less men their equipment was far superior to Frances equipment. The French army was still led by the generals who fought in World War I and they still proscribed to trench warfare. They didn't understand that strategies had progressed between the wars. They expected Germany to attack the Maginot line and basically repeat WW I which would have made France happy. They didn't even think that the Germans would simply go around the dug in defenses. Basically they were stupid.

As for the thread....France hands down.
