hong kong: these protestors are fighting to live freely in a non-police state. the u s government totally supports them.

united states: these protestors are fighting to live freely in a country where they don't have to worry about getting murdered for living while black. to the government, they're a bunch of thugs.

why is civil disobedience okay in one situation and not the other?

I was puzzled by Pompeo's statement about Hong Kong, saying the US no longer considers they have autonomy, so 'we're going to stop cutting them deals'. Big in that coverage was China Communist Party and coronavirus like anyone in the US gives a shit about an ex-rental the landlord is reclaiming. Train/lights/bang/surprise/mock-indignation ...

A few months back Comrade Xi said the Hong Kong protesters who want to maintain their freedom will have their "bones ground to dust" under his compassionate rule. That's a bit more than the ex-rental analogy, and any free-thinking individual feels just a bit of pain when formerly free people are brought under the umbrella of a soul-crushing regime.
That is communism. People will be tracked. What they say will be monitored. People who speak out will disappear and never be heard from again.
A few months back Biden said it was a mistake to think of China as an enemy. China has never been our friend, and we finally have a president with the balls to say it and do something about it.

The Communist dynasty is digging its own grave. The next dynasty of their rising empire could be all kinds of worse, but a couple centuries later China will be dirt poor again.

Freedom and individual rights were never a priority anywhere in China since the beginning of history. Imposing Western values is at most a few decades of superficial overlay in places like Hong Kong.
