According to Morgan Quitno, here are this year's safest and most dangerous cities to live in, based on per capita crime statistics:

Code:

22 Santa Clara, CA Chattanooga, TN
23 Santa Clarita, CA Orlando, FL
24 Fremont, CA Philadelphia, PA
25 Newport Beach, CA Reading, PA
Good thing they are not basing it on raw numbers (Hey NYC and LA, I'm talking to you! :D)

I don't know about you, but I've had a whole lot more fun in the most dangerous cities!

If it can't be a ranch in wyoming, (I discovered that area too late in life to prepare for that), then I only have one other preference and that is a warm climate near the Atlantic ocean. Of the choices on the list I would prefer West Palm over Miami. Not because of anything in West Palm. I helped with the Hurricane Andrew cleanup. Other that a few very dear local people, I left nothing there I need to return for.

Baltimore should be...

Number One!

We won't take this forth place deal lying down, I tell you. I'm going to go out to kill someone right now, just to prove it!:p

Well, it's nice to see more cities around me on the safe list. Except the number one, Most Dangerous city is about 15 min away.

I would like to move

NORTH!!! At this point, I don't care where. :) I am sick of warm rainy days. LOL I think Michigan, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana all sound nice!

Storm

Where?

New Orleans

Due to travel requirements of a former profession I have visited a few of the cites from each list over the years. Some of which I spent weeks and others months. Based on my experiences the lists are accurate and I prefermost of those in the right column!

All in all, I would have to say that where I am is the best place. It's called home and no mater where that is, if you call it home, there's no other place better on earth or you would be there.

Interesting that most of the "most dangerous" places are mid tier - all the places that people think of as a modern day Sodom or Gomorrah don't even rate!

Native Detroiter

Can folks ever say anything good about Detroit? I can. I didn't grow up dodging bullets and neither was I dirt poor, raised by single parent on crack.

Housing is affordable. We have beautiful spacious, historic districts that are intergrated. We do have clean, safe neighborhoods. We have trees and folks plant flowers. There's more than the ghetto here. We're urban, but that doesn't mean the entire city is a cesspool.

Here, a black child grows up where the person in charge looks like him. He knows firsthand that he doesn't have to be a criminal or bum. We have role models for our children. Plenty of black folks here are educated, middle-class, have position and influence.

We have culture. We can boast that we have a major medical community and universities. One of the most prominent musuems in the nation is in Detroit. We have Eastern market one of the oldest farmers' market that draws all our surban neighbors for shopping. We have the largest African-American museum in the nation. We have a renowned symphony. We are international neighbors with Canada.

The rant probably isn't warrantedt. I normally don't trip, but I'm sick of hearing about how bad Detroit is especially from folks who haven't lived here.

Having said all that, yeah I moved. Thirty-five years in one place was enough. I wanted different. I'll move again as soon as my sweetie and I can arrange it. But, you never forget home.

Peace,

daughter

I guess I'm a little confused - at least here, no one lambasted Detroit - the only reference was made by Elizabeth, and that was to note that she lived near the city rated as number one.

As I said when I opened, I think the list is a little skewed - it ranks by per capita crime statistics. There are clearly cities with higher rates of incidence.

Sorry daughter I grew up there too and couldn't wait to leave it. Moved up north and to the west and have never regreted the move. I hate the east side of the state. Too many rude angry people over there for me.:)

Of course I would live in Scotland if I could live anywhere..... plan to someday;)

If I could choose it would be New Mexico for me. Taos.

OOOOOH, great choice! I love Taos. I'd include Durango, Colorado as an alternate.

And just for the record, that's only about per capita, and actual St. Louis City, not surrounding areas, including the county, that makes "us" #3 with a bullet.

The numbers of people actually living in the CITY of St. Louis, are dwindling, while the crime stays the same.

not directed at anyone

Bob--

The rant was strictly about the list. I've seen these stats published before. I feel they aren't accurate representations. That's all.

I've noticed a lot of members live in Michigan. Gingersnaps, as much as I love the city, I have grown tired of the concrete and landscape. I'm also tired of the overall climate of the metropolitan area: constant motion, competiveness, intensity. Lot of positives to be found in the city and the suburbs, too. I'm simply ready for a slower pace. Small towns are appealing to me. Most appealing would be a college town. Best mix.

Peace,

daughter

I lived in Detroit for part of my childhood..moved no more than 15 min from there..I would also like to know why Detroit is always put up high or at the top of these lists. But I do prefer living where I am. Close enough to everything but we have a house in a quiet place..a good sized yard for me to plant flowers and a garden. I do go into Detroit quite a bit..even if it's only to get one of those awesome coney dogs. :D

I live near Mission Viejo, Irvine, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. All those cities are in Orange County, CA, home of the "Orange Curtain" and some of the most conservative Americans alive. Born and raised there.

I like the area. I'm sure that, when I leave it for awhile, I'll eventually return. There are several cities in which I also want to live though. Probably spend a few years each in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Miami and New York City. I'm a big city kind of person, plus I'm too restless to want in one place too long. Setting down roots is something trees do, not me. ;)

I've been to a couple of those places but I look forward to seeing them soon. If I ever become an expatriate, I'd move to Sydney, Australia.

Balmer, Merlan..........it sucks here.....where else do you have an average statistic for people being killed from bullets falling from the sky cause people shoot their weapons up into the air.
