Where would you put it?

Ok, after thinking long and hard about it, I submitted my story "Best Served Cold" in Incest/Taboo. No, it's not about siblings, parent/child, or even cousins. It's about a girl who sleeps with her estranged boyfriend's best friend.

Loving wives didn't fit, she's not his wife. I guess I could have put it into Erotic Couplings, but that didn't feel right either.

I put it in Incest/Taboo because sleeping with your SO's bff is just wrong - TABOO.

I've gotten no less than 6 emails telling me (most of them not very nicely) that I've put it in the wrong category. I even turned Public Commenting off on ALL my stories because I'm tired of hearing it.

To make a long request short - let me know where you would have put it, please. If y'all agree I should have put it somewhere else, and can help me figure out where, I'll resubmit to have it moved...

I didn't get a chance to read it but assuming that your synopsis is accurate, Erotic couplings is where I'd place it. It doesn't really fit any other lit category, so EC is the catch all where all else seems to end up.

I think the problem is not being able to find agreement that sleeping with the best friend of a boyfriend you are estranged from is taboo. I think it's true that those reading in this category see the "incest" and not the "taboo" part of it, but once the couple are estranged, I'd think that any taboo aspect of these relationships is gone.

Inces/Taboo really should just be "Incest". We have "Fetish" for fetishes, and the very broad, general, "Erotic Couplings" for stories that don't fit in neatly anywhere.

On the scale of taboos, sleeping with your boyfriend's best friend is pretty mild. People go on Springer proudly announcing it. Compare that to incest, where even between consenting adults, I doubt people would tell even their closest friends about it.

Finally, categories always have a degree of reader expectation. Most Incest/Taboo readers want stories either between siblings or parent-child. First cousins, aunt/uncle are still incest (at least by US standards), but for better or worse aren't what the average reader is looking for.

So yeah, I would have put it in Erotic couplings, although you probably wouldn't have gotten much response there at all, as the category is so broad it doesn't really have much dedicated readership.

Quite true. I've even known writers who've gotten raked over the coals for writing about step-siblings or adopted siblings in that category. Personally, if I didn't know what category a story might be best suited for, I'd just throw in some anal.

I had a similar experience with my story, so I took out the stray bits and added some more specific descriptions and re submitted it in the same category.
