Sorry, this is a thread for the old folks on the board. Where were you November 22, 1963, when you heard President Kennedy had been killed?

I was in the 2nd grade, and Sister Agnes, the principal, came on the p.a. system and made the announcement. I'm not sure if I knew who the president was (or even what the president was) before that day, but I sure learned quickly. And I remember being at my grandparents' house for Sunday dinner and watching Jack Ruby come out of the crowd to shoot Lee Oswald.

Hell of an introduction to politics.

Okay well I definitely can't answer that one...well you wouldn't believe me if I did..but anyway...I can tell you where I was when the Challenger blew up. Math class, Junior high. We had a TV in the room to watch the launch. A big thing back then to watch the shuttle take off. Imagine the horrified faces as it actually blows up as we watch. Something you don't forget.

damn, don't tell me i'm the oldest guy on lit now. i was in chemistry class my sophomore year in high school. it was so fresh in '65 when i joined the air force that i caught crap for being from texas. "you guys killed the president." i heard it a bunch.

it is kinda freakie to see that it's in the history books now along with vietnam....

well, guess i'll get a glass of warm milk and totter off to bed.

Holy crapweasle, you had Sister Agnes too?
Dunno, the prinicipal's name started with an A, my teacher was Sister Sheila if I recall correctly. Weird day, weird time, dangerous to be a public figure in the U.S. if your last name began with a K.

I was a year and a half old. Probably crawled into the crib next to mine and gave whatever chickie was in there the high hard one and crawled out leaving her breathless and satisfied in her pink pj's.

Ok that was just WRONG. Fitting. But WRONG.

I was hardly satisfied, but I am still breathless...

Not quite the oldest. I was in late teens. Remember the day clearly.

_______

I was also in the 2nd grade, and in Mrs. Hill's class, while the 3rd grade teacher, across the hall, had a B&W television that served as the news feed for that end of the hall in our elementary school.

After JFK's death confirmation by a distraught Walter Cronkite, Mrs. Hill returned to our class, in a tearless, but very sad face to slowly announce, "Boys and girls, the President of the United States is dead."

She led us in the Lord's Prayer (in a practical means to settle us all down), but most of us in the class cried anyway; and it became clear school was going to be sent home soon--in a half hour of the news. Our family watched the remaining, incredible drama unfold before our unbelieving eyes the remainder of the afternoon.

Yes, one HELL of an introduction to politics, news, and reporting--breaking many "taboos and standards" that shielded the sugar-coated information that spoon-fed a consuming public, in that age, a different version of real life.

Our sense of innocence was changed--as we witnessed murder on TV-- by this life-changing event--burned into my memory, forever.

I was too young to remember, but I swear I remember seeing Bobby's funeral on tv and I was only 2 or 3.

No, you're not the oldest........we tie for that "distinction" (as it were)

I was also a sophomore and sitting in the visual aids room of my high school getting ready to see a movie when the principle stuck his head into the semi-darkened room and made the announcement. Several girls cried but, other than that, there was silence.......the 'class clowns' made no comments or wise-cracks, even. Very somber.

That's where I was.

{now if we could just figure out who did it before I die, I'll be a happy man}

2nd grade also

at Toluca Lake Elementary. The teachers all cried and we were sent home early. It was my last day at that school as we moved across town that weekend. The first thing plugged in at the new house was the tv so everyone could watch the funeral.

A more vivid recollection was the Cuban Missile Crisis and being lined up in "drop drill" position along the main hallways of the school for what seemed like hours and hours. They finally decided we weren't going to be nuked in the time it would take to get us home, so they sent us home early.

My earliest recollection of television was at age 4 watching JFK's inauguration while my mother explained it to me.

Wow, two of them older than me!

I was at home eating dinner. Conversation stopped and didn't restart for some time.

I love your holiday av, Kotori! :)

I was 5 years old and in kindergarten. I don't remember much about when he actually died, but I remember the funeral on TV. I think it was the first time I'd hear the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and I've loved it ever since. I always think of JFK when I hear it, too.

Okies ... I would have to say that I was not a thought in my parents mind for at least another 2 more years.

My parents got married in 1965 & I was born a few years later.
