I have a story that I wrote that is based on a photograph taken by a professional photographer. Providing I get his permission to republish the image here (with appropriate credit and link) what category should this be published in? Is there a way to publish so the image appears at the top and the story beneath it? I see the Artwork category but is that the proper category? Or do I just submit the story as I normally would and embed the image?

If the photo depicts something (like a sex act) that happens in the story, then it might get published in the Illustrated category. But if the story is just inspired by the photo, I'm not sure.

According to what I consider the Bible on categories, Love Your Readers: Categories, this rule applies: "Stories with accompanying illustrations go here [the Illustrated category] . The only exception is if you write a story for a particular category, and submit the illustrations separately under Erotic Art. That's very rare. "

It's just a photo of a nude woman. It's not really a story either for that matter - more as if the woman was speaking directly to the reader, sharing her thoughts.

Close to half my stories here on Lit have come from photos. I haven't posted the picture to go along with them. My job is to show the readers the photo with words.

Not an answer to your question but...

LOL - point taken. I just REALLY like the photo and wrote the piece at the request of the photographer so it feels like they should be posted together. I think I'll try embedding the photo and submit as I normally would.

I think anything with a illustration/photo attached has to go in the Illustrated category.

That would put it in the Illustrated category. Somewhere there are guidelines in how to send it all in. If not, Laurel would be your best source of info. I do think the pic has to be separate from the text but I'm not certain. You will also have to put a statement in for laurel that you have permission to use the image.

Okay, okay, Uncle!

There's no right answer. You should do what you want and if the photographer's given you permission to use the photo and you want to use it, go ahead. It probably goes in Illustrated. There have been some extremely successful stories in that category. Many readers like the combo of words and picture.

I think that's normally true, but Laurel might be persuaded to bend the rule. She did it for NaokoSmith's Valentine's Day entry in 2016 (Maude Comes for Valentine). That story was published in Romance with two small images imbedded in it.
