Where Is The Place To Begin Reading H.p. Lovecraft?

It Better Be Excellent.

Start with the stories associated with the Cthulhu Mythos, the stuff before that was pretty much standard fare for the day of pulp horror things like the Thing in The Cave are pretty predictable.

My recommendation would be my personal favorite, The Rats in the Walls.

Thanks for the help.

The Novella At The Mountains of Madness is good, but you have to stay with it, nothing happens ina hurry with HPL....kind of like me.

Del Rey has all of his stories in a series of paperbacks.

aMAZON has much of his stuff on Kindle

I agree that the Cthulhu mythos stories are the most interesting. But you have to keep in mind that Lovecraft is really NOT a very good writer. He's basically a hack.

Don't get me wrong; he's one of my favorites! I read him for his imagination, his audacity, and his style. But if you were to submit his prose anonymously to an editor, it would get ripped to shit. So you have to be prepared to accept that or find yourself another writer to read.

My favorite of his stories is Call of Cthulhu. The Shadow Over Innsmouth is also pretty good, as is The Shadow Out Of Time. Herbert West - Reanimator is a cute little read. Personally, I think At the Mountains of Madness is waaay too long for the amount of substance it contains, unless you are a fan of antarctic geography descriptions.

If you have an e-reader, you can get his complete works here for a very good price:

The witch house is the one that was recommended to me as a first read, and I enjoyed it. Mountains of madness is also a good choice.

OK. I bought a collection of 62 stories and 5 novellas for Kindle from Amazon. All the suggested stories are in this collection, so I should be good to go.

Showtime did a great version of that as part of their Masters of Horror series. Brown Jenkin was as creepy as I imagined him to be.
