Where should I put it?

I am working on a story involving time travel. Should I put it in Sci Fi and fantasy where it will be started in a futuristic time.

Would appreciate any feedback on where I should put it. This is my first time travel story and honestly I have no idea which category it would belong in.

Most likely Sci-Fi/Fantasy is the appropriate category for a time travel story. The readers of the category give you a lot more latitude for varying themes than many others, eliminating the need to worry about putting in something that might turn readers away.

The price you pay is that the readership of the category is low by comparison to many other categories on the site.

TimeTravel is almost always suitable for SF/F but if it's not a primary emphasis of the story, other categories might be more suitable.

Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series is a good example of what I'm talking about -- it's a time travel story but it's marketed as "Romance" or "Historical Fiction" and is almost never shelved in the Science Fiction and Fantasy section of bookstores or libraries because the time travel element is really only a very minor part of series; the series is more about looking at pre-revolutionary war Europe and America with a deliberate nod to 20th century sensabilities.

Pick the main theme of your story -- how the characters interact rather than how they come together -- and weigh that against the science fiction element. Then choose your category by which is more representative of the overall story line.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy cat. IMHO.

Readership is lower in this cat. than Romance for instance, but write what pleases you and you're satisfied with.

The readers will find you, rest assured.
