Where do you like doing it?

I'm fortunate enough to live alone in my own house, so my distractions are limited to the bitch to the left. And the train. I live next to the tracks (on the right side, surprisingly) so it's pretty loud, but you get used to it. I don't even notice it anymore unless I'm on the phone or watching a movie (the train always comes during crucial dialogue).

Money would be nice. Squids would be better--I love calamari!

I live alone, and have a home office that I use for my writing. On a full size PC, with a big desk/table, and a very comfortable, ergonomic chair. One of the reasons I bought my house is that the staircases are in the center, forming a core, so I can walk from office to hallway to kitchen to living room and back to office, pacing in big circles. Get up, take a turn or two around the house, sit down, type out the next sentence or paragraph, then pop up to think through the next one as I pace.

How many others pace as part of the writing process? Though come to think of it, erotica is the one type of writing that I don't pace, I seem to have other distractions... :D

There are quite a few writers who have to work in adverse conditions, and still get the writing done. I respect them for it, but don't know that I could do it. I find I do my best work when I am writing full time, with no distractions, and everything set up just exactly the way I like it.

I write in my library/office at a full size PC. I usually write at night after the house quiets down, and if I get caught up in something, I might write until early morning. I have to have quiet so I can concentrate. Lots of coffee helps.

It was me

who wrote "unregistered's" post. Haven't had my coffee yet.

Oh yeah. With me it goes beyond pacing. Especially in the early stages of a story, I walk and walk and walk. Sometimes I might walk five or ten miles. Good for the dog, but bad for the shoes.

I wonder if I can write off shoe leather on my taxes?

I like to do that too, karmadog. Do you ever bring along a microcassete recorder? I do when things are really rolling on a book, just because sometimes I get so many ideas for plot, character, and particularly dialogue.

I haven't had the guts to try to write off my boots yet. But I did write off the recorder, as writing is the sole thing that I use it for... :D

Unfortunately my computer and writing center is smack dab in the middle of my kid's war zone. I have had to learn to write through all the noise...and constant stops to shut down potentially violent situations. For this reason, the beginning of the school year was a godsend.

But this does work for me. During the day, I rough out chapters, write at will without thought of the set-up or corrections, and let my mind wander in every direction. It is in the peace of night that I can then work. My most productive time to get the best writing done is from 9pm to 3am. The earlier days work is made sense of and pieced in.

I mostly do it at work. I've got the overnight shift with very little actual work to do (I love my job! Took me 12 years with the agency to get here, though). Admittedly, it does feel a little peculiar when I'm writing something naughty on company time. But the boss knows about my weird hobbies and habits, so he is amazingly tolerant of how I spend my evenings ;)

I carry a small artist's sketchbook with me and whenever and idea hits I scrawl it down.

Whole chapters have hit me in a sudden flash before on the street and I know from experience that they will only stay in my mind for a matter of minutes.

When I get home, or a moment with my new laptop, I write it down in a more structured manner.

Where I am is not so relevant as long as I can be sure of no eyes peering over my shoulder.

Where do I like doing it?

Anywhere of course!

I do my most writing when I am alone and my surroundings are quiet and peaceful. Often I find myself sitting at the pc drizzling little bits onto the screen. There is no thinking about my fingers on the keyboard, they just whizz over the keys putting my thoughts directly onto the screen in front of me.

When I go out into the world, I am never without a pen and piece of paper. Always I find myself jotting down little snippets, mostly of useless information, but now and again, the odd bit comes in handy. My family are now used to me stopping in the middle of a crowded footpath and scribbling something down. Though mostly they think I'm making lists. I'm a 'list person'. If I don't write it down then I can't relax my mind and forget about it in case I really do forget it.

The other time I do most writing is in the middle of the night, well anywhere from about 2am to 5am actually. I use pen and paper for that, don't want to wake the house up with the keyboard noise.

Whenever I write, I submerse myself into the writing. I hear nothing else around me, no lawnmowers, no neighbours chatting or knocking on the door. I still love it.

tc, I don't have a recorder, I have to keep everything in my tiny little melon. I need to get one though. I want to interview this WWII vet who lives near me. You wouldn't believe this guy's stories. If I wrote them, people would say they were too ridiculous to be believed.

I write all over the planet.

I merely type things out at the computer.

I have carried a notebook for 18 years (no, not the same one...) and write down everything that inspires me.

Lines of dialogue, descriptions of people/sketches of people, ideas. You name it.

I like to lay down on my comfortable bed and write, write, write, until the story is finished. I fill page after page in my little notebook. Then I cleanwrite it on my computer. But I can't Create a story on the computer - I need to do it by hand, feel the paper under my hand, and get ink stains over my fingers.

Since my writing is almost all jerk-off storiesmost of it is writen in my head. It is then transfered to the computer(tower system) in a corner of the "Family Room." Since the wife and I are both retired with all offspring living elswhere that is the converted garage that family room isalmost a uphamisim(sp).

Most of my stories have been motivated by rare periods of deprivation. The early ones(almost unreadable) were done paper and pencile over sixty years ago. The ons posted on Lit were writen durring my wifes menopause. I have several that are being rewriten, and when finished will also be posted.

I do no other writing since retiring, prior to that I did a little tec writing(patent aps.)

1. I read new e-mails and comments.

2. I get a bit turned on reading some Literotica stories.

3. I have the TV on in the other room (I like a little bit of noise) and sit at the computer until an idea hits.

4. Write, write, write! Pausing briefly to....never mind :p

5. Submit the story and go back to reading the great literature at Literotica and Nifty!

6. Turn off the computer, get off of my towel, and place it in the washer ;-) hee hee hee

Location, location, location

I like doing it in a phone booth just after putting on the blue suit and eyeglasses I find neatly folded there but then some big guy in a cape and tights shows up and breaks my concentration......

I can be anywhere when I compose the stories. The computer, unfortunately, is in the living room. My family, fortunately, does not read over my shoulder much.

Ideas come to me usually when I'm in bed, in that twilight zone time between wakefulness and dreaming. Usually I'm too lazy to write them down at that moment, but if they're strong enough, they mull in my head until I absolutely have to write them down (on the PC) or I will explode. I get the idea out in a long spurt, then go back over them again and again, tweaking and fine-tuning. Actually it's hard for me to say I'm ever finished with a story. There's always something you can improve on. Another time when ideas strike is when I'm driving my motorbike into the city. It distracts me from the terrible Athens traffic.

I have a little cubbyhole of a study, with walls lined with shelves of dictionaries (I'm a translator) within an arm's reach. Kids often interrupt so my best time is late at night or when they're at school.

Well I write in bed! Actually everything goes through my mind first, I have to sort of daydream a scenario to make sure it works before I can think of commiting it to PC then I sit in bed and I type!

Only problem with writing up stories in bed is that snacking can get a bit messy..and crumbs in the bed are not a good thing!

Also i reckon having my PC next to my bed probably isn't good feng shui nut well it works for me!

Either on my computer in the middle of the night (partly to avoid questions from people who don't know about my alter-ego and partly for something to do during my frequent insomnia attacks) or in a notebook on my bed, which I've been doing more often recently as I've been away from a computer.
