Where do we start?

THere are plenty of things that can be used that aren't expensive, but it kind of depends on what you're both interested in. Most of my treasure chest is full of items that cost less than $5, each. sometimes ti's a question of thinking outside the box... says the lady who has a treasure box full of things most people wouldn't consider kinky. LOL Most of my treasure chest is filled with items bought from craft, grocery, hardware, drug, and dollar stores.

As for the gag- she might just not like gags, or maybe it was that particular style of gag that she didn't like.

I guess I just need to learn more here and I just want to know where we should start for it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I suggest you check out the book Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns: The Romance and Sexual Sorcery of Sadomasochism by Philip Miller, Molly Devon

These is good material for getting started without spending all the money you don't have to purchase equipment you might not use more than once.

wishing you both all the best on your journey, and keep asking us here

The Library (Link) thread at the top of the forum has a lot of good information/ideas archived in it; asking questions or starting threads with semi-specific topics might help.

The Loving Dominant is another good book on BDSM, as is The New Topping Book.

As to the gag...

Some people would use her dislike of the taste to their advantage; some wouldn't. Gags don't have to be officially sex-toy approved gags to do the job, either. ;)

Possible gags:

her own panties
plastic Easter egg
real egg (she thinks it's fresh; you know it's hard boiled)
a Christmas tree ball ornament (have a glass one laid out; switch it for plastic once she's blindfolded)
knotted bandana/length of fabric
golf ball sized wiffle ball
being told to stay silent
dog's chew toy/bone
clothespin on the tongue (you can adjust the spring to lighten tension, if you like)

The idea of furniture is nice and all, but isn't really necessary, IMO... I helped my roommate devise a bondage system for her bed last weekend- it had to be easily hideable, portable, and work on a bed without any headboard/footboard/frame (rock climbing webbing/O-rings slid between the box and mattress); at her partner's house, they apparently use the futon a lot. I saw a coffee table at a thrift the other day that was deliciously long and sturdy...

Just about everything you see on a bdsm site can be made much cheaper if you do it yourself. There are very few things that are made specify for bdsm. A flogger comes to mind. You can get all kind of whips and crops from a tack store. Get clover clamps from a sewing store. Spreader bars are cheap and easy.

I'd invest in a good flogger. Yeah, I made my first out of a golf club and boot laces. But there is no substitute for the real thing. And leather wrist and ankle restraints are nice things to have.
