Where do the votes go?

Hi,
A question for the authors out there. Where the hell do the votes go? I've been publishing on the site for a couple of months and notice on the main page that tells you the votes/views/ratings on my stories that the votes just kind of disappear. For example my latest story had 27 votes on thursday, it is now down to 22 obviously therating goes up and down I guess based on whatever vote happens to be taken away. Does anyone know why this is? I am on the site for feedback and to try to get better. I told myself I wouldn't get caught up in ratings but when a story does get to the 4.5 or better its a little frustrating to watch it sink because the votes are taken away. anyways I'm just wondering if anyone who has been on here for awhile has an answer.
