Yes, it's me again. And yes, it's music again ....

I can't help it .... music is my life force .... how dull life would be without it!

Right, new thread ..... come on, you music afficionados out there .... who knows how bands or singers got there names, because for sure, there's been some strange ones over the years ....

I'll start off with a pretty well-known one ..... and one of my favourite bands ever ....

Steely Dan

Named after a dildo in the William Burroughs novel 'Naked Lunch'. According to Burroughs, the first Steely Dan was a metal dildo that an evil German bulldyke prostitute crushed using her pussy, and the second Steely Dan is still in use .....

Okay, let's keep this going with another ..... this again is fairly well known, I think :

Duran Duran

Named after a character in the 1967 Jane Fonda movie 'Barbarella'.

And another ..... :D

Savage Garden

Name taken from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, as Darren Hayes is supposedly a big fan .....

Here's one from me

Led Zeppelin

The name allegedly came from the fact that Jimmy Page actually asked Keith Moon to be the drummer of Led Zeppelin (they weren't called that at the time). Moon was apparently happy in The Who and told Jimmy that he thought the idea would go down "like a lead balloon". Jimmy loved it and after changing the spelling to Led (to avoid mis-prounounciation) they changed from the New Yardbirds to Led Zeppelin.

Great! Thanks, Wanderer ..... I didn't know that! I think we all could learn something here .... :D

Oh, here's another I've just remembered ....

Level 42

There was a supercomputer in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' that gave the answer to life, the universe and everything as "42". There were supposedly copyright problems with actually calling the band 42, so they added 'Level'. The rumour that they are named after a sign in the movie 'Brazil' is wrong.

You dirty rat!!! I was getting ready to post that!!! ;)

While in High School, their Gym teacher and local Real Estate Agent Leonard Skinner would often hand out suspensions because they had long hair. At the age of 16 or 17, they dropped out of school and began their musical careers. Then, while playing at local high schools, the Band (as a joke) announced itself as "The Leonard Skinner Band". Members of the crowd that knew about the gym teacher laughed and cheered at the joke, but it was the nucleus they needed. With a few alterations, they would eventually become the " Lynyrd Skynyrd Band "

Another fairly well-known one, I think .....

ABBA

An acronym for the first names of the band members: Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Anderson and Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad

Thanks, Veebs! I shall file that one away for later use ..... :D

I got one!!! I got one!!! :nana:

Nickelback - The bass player used to work at Starbucks coffee and spent many days saying "here's your nickel back."

:D

Motley Crue

The band went through several name changes before Mars presented them with Mottley Krue, recalling a time when his previous band was described as a "motley looking crew." After agreeing on this name and altering the spelling somewhat, the newly formed group began to play at local clubs and soon became cult favorites, known for their unique stage theatrics. It was then soon after that their name became, Mötley Crüe.

Another ....

David Bowie

He didn't go by his given name 'David Jones', not wanting to be confused with Davy Jones of the Monkees, who were big at the time. Supposedly, he took his last name from the Bowie knife, which he reputedly had some sort of fascination with ....

I am learning a lot here too, Higher. Thanks for the thread.

Barenaked Ladies

Teenage friends Ed Robertson and Steven Page found themselves laughing at the innocent and child-like term "barenaked lady" while attending a Bob Dylan concert in 1988. Both Robertson and Page agreed that it would make a funny band name, and since the duo was already into rock music and playing guitar, the Barenaked Ladies were born.

*racking my brains* trying to remember the one I heard a few weeks ago on the radio...... its driving me crazy. The name of the band was taken from some name for a group of guys cumming . Sheesshh.. you'd think I'd remember that

That's what I heard, supposedly suggested by Brian Jones .....

STYX

Styx is a mythical river that people crossed over to go into Hell

side note: they originally were a garage band from the South side of Chicago that called themselves the TW4 (There Were 4) and used to play at my High School dances
