PICKENS, S.C. — Former President Donald Trump marked a return to the large-scale rallies of his previous presidential campaigns, speaking to a massive crowd gathered in the streets of a small South Carolina city on a blazing summer weekend.

“There’s nowhere else I’d rather be to kick off the Fourth of July weekend than right here on Main Street, with thousands of hardworking South Carolina patriots who believe in God, family and country,” Trump said Saturday to a roaring crowd in downtown Pickens as temperatures climbed into the 90s.

Randal J. Beach, the police chief in the conservative Upstate community of about 3,400 residents, told The Associated Press on Sunday that his estimates of the crowd “were somewhere between 50-55,000.”

I underestimated Trump’s support. Polls I saw in 2021 indicated waning support among GOP voters but that’s obviously not the case right now. He’s not only the clear front runner in the GOP primary race, the RCP average has him slightly ahead of Biden. Still very early of course.

YouTube has plenty of interviews with attendees at Cult45 rallies. They proudly announce how many rallies they've been to and how far they've travelled.

So it turns out that it's the same people going around; much like counting how many Trumps turn up.

It’s just one data point among many. I was a Trump skeptic in 2015-early 2016. Thought he’d get buried in the primaries. But those massive rallies turned out to be real indicators of his support. On the other hand, Biden was rarely seen in the 2020 campaign yet wound up being the Democratic nominee by default and winning the general. Context matters when evaluating crowd size.

men and ridiculous vehicles has ALWAYS been an american thing... (not just men, sorry) but it's as american as hot dogs & baseball. Just my opinion (and many others).

While i do agree rallies are a bit silly (but i hate ANY public gathering that results in significant traffic or traveling to a major city, usually filled with moronic drivers!) to each their own.

To the user who mentioned MAGA rally goers being so proud of distance travelled and # of rallies attended, don't judge the many by the few. Just like any group, there are fanatics and then those who support person/idea but not as fanatical; to stereotype all of any group is absolutely ridiculous/ignorant, just as Lazaran here groups ALL trump supporters as MAGAT's.... WTF does that term even mean? sorry....

Politicians in the US have gotten away with way too much BS for WAY too long. It seems that's never gonna change, the way politicians continue to cover up (cough, cough hunter, cough,...excuse me). It's merely become the lesser of two evils....sad really. On that, I think most can agree.

I was raised around guns, still have many myself and NEVER have any shot an actual person, or been pulled to threaten a bad person. the GUNS are not the problem. my guns (including one everybody will get their panties in a bunch over because of it's name) have not ever once shot themselves. It always takes my finger (or that of another trusted, responsible, law-ABIDING party) to shoot, even just for target practice.

Further, gun restrictions will only apply to those who care about the law. Pretty sure we both agree most mass shooters, snipers, evil people we hear about on the evening news care NOTHING for law & order. thus more restrictions won't prevent them from obtaining and commiting violent crime. Illegal guns are the true issue. Taking guns from law abiders only further increases the bad peoples' audacity to actually do something bad. yet we rarely hear of the church goer whose concealed carry weapon harmed ONLY the bad person already harming others....
