What did you spend your allowance on?

Marxist's thread on books in the digital age prompted me to recall how many books I purchased w/ my allowance. I clearly recall the excitement of going to the bookstore and buying Bobsey Twins or Boxcar Children books. As I got older, my babysitting money went to Stephen King or Dean Koontz.

So was it baseball cards? Clothes? Porn mags?

Me and my sister both went wild with gobots i know it sounds stupid but we did it.

The Texas Gentleman

I did not get an allowance but did odd jobs for spending cash... I would buy The Classic comic books with titles like Moby Dick ect... also I was a big Spiderman fan. I also remember buying soft drinks, candy and ice cream...the porn mags did nort show up til later in life

when i was a kid we never had an allowance, it was called child labor...u live here for free u eat here for free....now u work here for free!

seriously i was a video arcade junkie...most of my allowance went to asteroids, space invaders, and the like, occaisionally wed take in a movie too!:p

I CAN'T SPEAK OF MY TIME AS A KID BUT...

In my early twenties, when I began training with weights, I spent many hard earned dollars on bodybuilding & fitness books and journals.

No allowance, and much of what I earned was supposed to be spent on school clothes, which I resented because I wasn't really allowed to choose the clothes I liked either.

As a kid I spent money on candy, favorite foods, bicycles and toys, comics and so on. Books I got from the library - they were too expensive otherwise.

As I got older (teen years), I spent money on booze, gas, cars, women and tobacco.

I didn't get an allowance

But, back in my pre-teen days of babysitting.....I would spend my money on clothes, albums, movies on the weekends with friends.

Now, my money is spent on bills and my son!

When I was younger, barbies were the center of my universe. Birthday money, chirstmas money, good grade money, allowance (when I got it) all went to barbies, barbie clothes, barbie accesories, funiture for the dream house. They seemed so expensive, and I would save for ages to buy something.

Now at Christmas I walk into KayBee Toys, and buy 5 barbies to donate to the local children's home, and it costs me about $30. Where were the $6 dollar barbies when I was young? The $25 from grandma for my birthday would of made KB heaven......

I had tons of Barbie stuff. Every Christmas, my mom filled a coat box full of homemade clothes. Somewhere along the line I got rid of it. Now that I have 2 daughters, I wish I had saved it all. *sigh*

My money was always divided half and half first, and then got divided again. Half of it went into the bank (still does for that matter) and the rest I had to divide between saving up for something big, books, and Christmas money. The something big was usually a vacation we were planning where I would want plenty of money to spend on fun things, the Books took up the biggest slice (this is why I have 3 sets of bookshelves in my room) and the Christmas money was always fun because I could give my family and friends really cool gifts.

Like most of the people here, I did not get an allowance as a child. All of my babysitting money went into my school fund - first to pay for clothes and school supplies for junior high & then high school, and the rest went towards college. I didn't care much for toys as a child, and like STG, the public library was my source of books.

I never really got a set allowence, but my parents usually let me get a book or two if we went shopping. I was a book-a-holic. Still am.

I loved the Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley, any of the scary 'young adult' stuff before stephan king. Loved Boxcar children. hmm... You know, there was very little I wouldn't read. Hell, even started in on the Romance novels when i was in 8th grade. Loved VC Andrews, too. Never realized until I got older that all of her series were the same. Some girl in the wrong family, found her real family, some incest involved at some point. Illigitamate kids, and then the story of the daughter after that. Each and every one.

I love books.

clothes! I still spend a lot of money on clothes...though, in recent years my style has stayed pretty much the same, so now its mostly shoes I buy. A girl can never have too many shoes! :D

shoes shoe shoes

could never understand the need to have so many shoes, i have like three pair:D

I didn't get an allowance.

Around age ten I found out my friends would get the "I all ready gave you your allowance," speech. I had more than their allowance could ever afford by saying,"hey Mom can I get this book." -Always worked with books.-

Now I spend around $800 a year on books. Never was into toys and such.

When I was younger I had a model railroad and spent most of my allowance and any other money I got on that.

In college I started to read (I always could before, but never did) and buy books. Still prefer to this day to buy books, only hard bound books too. Paperbacks deteriorate.

Allowance???? this is? lol

Fuck I've never gotten an allowance in my life, never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever

Okay i'm done.

When I was a kid I got 50 cents a week - my step-father never got over the depression. My brother and I would ride our bikes to the local corner store and buy candy and sodas and crap with it. All the stuff my mom wouldn't get at the grocery store.

When I started making money babysitting, I saved for clothes. Contempo was all the rage then (can't believe it's still around), and I would save for the $30 top that my mom thought was too extravagant.

Today, my mad money goes to spa days and expensive sunglasses.

My allowance was spent on ....

Barbies or Barbie Clothes and SHOES! ...
Saturday Matinees though more popcorn was thrown than eaten ...
Records, yes the old black vinyl pre-cassette records ...

My first allwance was 25 cents, then 50 cents, then a big jump to $1. By the time I was in high school my allowance was $5 but out of that I had to buy my lunch each day if I didn't bring something from home. I brown bagged alot or ate some really strange cheap lunches. Twinkies, Slim Jims, Snowballs, gross PB&J sandwiches from the lunch room (25cents), an Egg Roll from the Chinese Kitchen or whole dill pickles ....... eeeooooowww.

hmmmm looking back over this list I notice a pattern of phallic symbols ..... ;)

no allowance

but if i ran an errand 4 my mom, she let me feep the change. somhow that was never more than 50 cents. (unless i got her cigarettes. she wasn't supposed to smoke and i made a killing to keep my mouth shut!) anyway, with that money....
fireworks.

Hee hee, I still have my full collection of every last damn Sweet Valley book made (the originals - not the freaky new ones)

and ... *psst Gilly .. c'mere* From time to time I still get them out and skim through -

My allowance never started until I went to college - and then it was to go toward living extras (I got $60 a month) which meant it usually went for smokes, booze and the occasional white sheet for toga parties:D

-giggles- when ever I see one at a yard sale, or a used book sale cheap, I buy em. And yup, I still.....

read em all the time as well..... shhhh....

I thought about this since last night, and I can't really remember! We got 5 cents for each year of our age at first. I think towards the end of my allowance years I was up to a couple bucks every two weeks. I know I saved it for vacations to have spending money. And I used it to buy my mom and dad presents for their birthdays and Christmas. I think I used it for candy at the local mall, and maybe earrings and stuff after I was old enough to have my ears pierced. My allowance days ended almost 30 years ago, so it has been awhile!

I used to take the $50 my Dad gave me for my birthday and get my mother's birthday gift with it. It was blood money! I know it!
*giggle*

BTW, I loaned out book one of SWT and so I don't have a complete set. :(

Never let me into a book store or a pet store with less than $100 or ANY money if you want it back. My family banned me from Starbucks because it is attached to B&N. LOL
