Now that he has a successful middle class life, with all trimmings, a nice house, a good job, a good education, good neighbors, etc, he can't really look his black friends in the eye and tell them he knows how it feels, for fear of being taunted with the dreaded "not black enough" label.

This is his attempt to undercome the adversity he never faced. In the meantime, his white friends don't understand why he gets so upset about it all, because to them, he seems "white enough" to let it roll off without effect like they do.
