I do this, and it usually means that I'm busy doing something else - like answering email or posting. And I simply don't wish to be disturbed by inane chatter at the moment. But I like to leave MSN up to know when new mail arrives, so....

If some one logs in that I want to speak to, I will IM them. Other than that, if anything appears other than "Online", I do not wish to be disturbed. And if I see some one else like that, I assume they wish the same.

Really means nothing to me.

Besides, MSN goes into "Away" mode if there is no activity on your computer. Since a lot of folks with DSL connections leave their computers 24/7, it might simply mean they are truly away.
