And you click through and their favorites list is 10 pages long.

Or all incest stories.

. . . you are grateful that they took the time and effort to favorite you too.

True, but you feel a little less special than if their list consists of only 5 or 6 other names, all of whom are top rated authors

Then you need to work on your insecurities about how the world responds to your writing.

I agree and like seeing that I'm worth making a short list of authors that someone feels is top rated and worth reading, as opposed to being on a list of 100 or more that someone just hit favourite and gets to me at some point and likes or doesn't like my story/stories.

I check out who I get picked with as a faved author and knowing I'm up there with writers I myself feel are great, I know I'm doing something good. We all need markers to know how well we're doing and that to me is a good one.

Being faved, regardless of how many or what genres we are present, it's always a great pat on the back to get it and deserve to feel good about what we put out there to read.

The main reason I look is on the theory that I like my writing and so if someone else likes my writing they'll like other authors and stories I'd like. This is so rarely true that it's close to never.

Not when you're around to serve as a reminder of the dangers of hubris

This has some point other than backbiting? I see no reason why you need to be nasty about this. I think my advice on this is sound. This is a free-use story site. There's no reason to bite or second guess a reader who has taken the time and effort to denote approval of what you write--or to hang on to and complain about what other authors they like to read. There seems to be no end here to what Lit. authors will complain about, scrutinize, and agonize over.

Bingo. Although I do find it interesting when I can tell their kinks from their favorites list. But hey, power to 'em for finding what they like.

Which I am, but I don't think I've ever clicked on a link to see who else a reader had favorited. Never occurred to me to do it.

You needled Softy, he/she needled back - fairly gently I thought. Your response above might might lead readers to think the insecurity lies elsewhere.:)

But you're right that writers are far too ready to complain, scrutinize, and agonize - other writers that is.;)

Excuse me? The one I needled isn't the one who got snotty.

Other writers than who? You aren't a Lit. writer. I've never seen evidence that you were a Lit. reader either. ;)

Yes, I see where some would consider this. Then again...

I really don't pay attention to who favorites me, I don't really care. I write for me. If other happen to like what I write, fine. If they don't, I don't care.

Well, I don't stop writing or write anything different other than what I want to write on the basis of favoriting or not. I do, though, drop stories in all of the theme contests because it not only adds to the favoriting but it also expands readership. I'm quite happy to expand my reader base. I don't just post them here for myself. The point is, though, that I don't need millions of readers or scheme on getting more than any one else here. I'm happy just having a base that finds my stories and occasional supportive comments and e-mails.

No matter how anyone wants to look at it, on this site, it's still the epitome of getting noticed as a writer beyond comments and scores combined.

When somebody 'favourites' me (and believe or not, it happens quite a bit), I often look at the rest of their favourites list to see if I can work out what it is that gets me onto their list. More often that not, my investigations draw a blank. Oh, well ....

Plus a lot of times the reason they favorite you is just to bookmark your story. Once they finish reading it, the favorite is removed.

What does it mean when the same person favorites you in a row? :D

Happened to me this morning.

Was one for a story and the other was for you the author?

No story, just four favorites as an author in a row. I went back and checked. A new member as of yesterday. Maybe they don't know you should only favorite the author once and the stories when you like them.

Yes, that's been happening. I've assume that the stats only pick it up the first time and haven't thought further on it. I've also been favorited, unfavorited, and favorited again in quick succession.
