That why I like Rottentomatoes. They have everyone's reviews in snippet form and give an overall rating of Fresh or Rotten by percentage. It's the best site I've seen of its kind.

I usually read reviews after i see a flick that I DIDN'T like....
I never read reviews before i see a flick because I hate having any insight into the plot, characters, setting etc.

When i come away from a flick not satisfied I'm generally at a loss as to why.....so i search for reviews that might explain it to me....
Keep in mind that this is for movies that I think i should like.....not shitty flicks.
I know why I didn't like Gladiator......it was crappy story telling.....
but why did I not like Ghostworld? It was really good....

I'd agree that RT is probably the best single resource, as was noted they give other critic's opinions so you can usually figure out what it was that sucked, or makes the film worth the moolah.

Here is a small site that shoots straight, Pete's reviews are a helluva read either way, positive or negative. I tend to agree with most of what he say and as IFB was saying, he culls what sucked from the film and makes it clear.

Another site I came by rcently, in limited experience it seems to be worth a look, It doesnt tend to get sucked into the 'critic's darling' vortex. A bit heavy on advertising though.

I wish I knew more people with decent taste in film, regarding word of mouth...I ask if they have seen 'Titanic'...a yas and the conversation need not go further.

I never read reviews on-line. I listen to friends who have similiar movie tastes, and go heavily on how good the trailers look.

We just went to see Lord of the Rings friday night, and while fantasy is right up my ally, and the actors were great, I had never read the books, and found the story line lacking, and boring. For me, that is. However, the couple we went with, it was thier 3rd time going, and my husband loved it. I was disappointed, because I really thought I would have liked it. The movie was very well done. Special effects were great. Acting was good. Story line.. I didn't like. -sighs- I am a freak, I guess.

If you have the time Gilly...sit down and read the three books.

Okay, so that's over a thousand pages...but reading Tolkien is truly an amazing experience.

And when the next movie comes out..you might really enjoy it.

I go with my favorite directors...
If it's an Altman, Burton, Tarantino, Kubrick or a Polanski flick, I'm there.

I just go to the movie is it seems like something I might want to see... I never read any reviews...

I watch a crap load of movies, and I read all kinds of reviews from Entertainment Weekly and Premier to the various websites listed above. I have yet to find one source that I consistantly agree with. One thing is for shure my local newsrag's (Orlando Slantinel) reviews suck ass!

Local papers tend to suck. I'm always at odd with the AJC. They seem to get their reviews from the trailer.

Anybody seen "Beautiful Mind" or "Orange County"? How bad or good are they. Salon slammed BM but everyone is saying it's so wonderful. OC might be fun for a teen movie, having Jack Black and all.

I rarely trust film critics, especially when the consistently pan the films I like. I sometimes read reviews about questionable films, and I pay attention when they all say that a film is bad, like when they said to pass on Battlefield Earth (that particular time the were right).

Well, right now in NYC it's $10 to see a flick!

Because of this I rarely go anymore, but if I do it's likely because I enjoy the actors and/or directors involved in the project. I will then sometimes read some reviews AFTER my viewing just to compare what I thought about it to the rest of the opinions.

it doesn't much matter to me, if my friends and family liked or disliked a movie. I want to make the call myself, because we may not have the same likes.

I can rely on movie critics to hate the movies I like the most. But usually I know what I like and go see it. I've rarely seen a movie in a theatre and thought "Now why in the hell did I waste my money on that crap?" :D

I read a few of the sites listed above, plus I talk to people I know and read what folks on BBs like this one have to say.

I saw LOTR today. I'm not a Tolkienite (though I read the trilogy as a kid), and I'm not much on fantasy trolls/knights/etc. That said, Peter Jackson's LOTR is the best movie I have ever seen in my entire life. The casting was perfect. The movie - for being 3 hours - was exceptionally well-paced. It was a stunningly beautiful movie. And it somehow managed to give you enough background so that you understood the point of the rings and all that without drowning the movie in tons of dense explanation. THIS is what movies SHOULD be. I did not expect to enjoy the movie 1/100 as much as I did. It's going to be a long year waiting for #2.

OC looks like crap, despite Jack Black - which would be fitting, as the real OC is miles of crappy strip malls. I'm going to see The Royal Tannenbaums next week. Anyone seen it? Liked it/disliked it?

I wanna see The Royal Tannenbaums too. I have a pass to see Orange County on the 10th. I think I'm going to go even though my instinct tell me that it's not my cup of tea. But I'm a sucker that way. If a favorite is in a film I usually will show up.

I saw LOR under duress and I wasn't impressed in the least bit. I thought it was well acted but just about every decision in the film seemed to be a forgone conclusion. I mean if Froddo doesn't go ahead with the adventure to destroy the ring at the fellowship council, what else can happen? Also, many of the fight sequences played out with Blade-like silliness. I'm not waiting with baited breath to see the next one.

A movie I definitely want to see is Black Hawk Down.

Royal Tenenbaums is very good. If you are already a fan of Wes Andersen then you won't be dissapointed. This movie lacks the humour of Bottle Rocket and especially Rushmore....but it has merit and I enjoyed it very much.
The crowd was weird in this one.....there were people there that I knew would hate the flick they were abotu to see adn they did...I can't imagine what drew them to it in the first place.

Give it a shot and let me know what you thought...

I wouldn't say that I 'trust' anyone but I don't believe I've ever guessed incorrectly about whether I'd like a movie or not based on its trailer and a basic understanding of what the movie is about.

It's rare that my opinion of a moive changes greatly between the time the lights go down and when they come back again.

I happen to live in Roger Ebert's home town (big shit, right?) so around here his word is pretty much gold, but more than that I've briefly met the guy a couple of times in informal situations (like riding an elevator in a hospital) and he's a really nice person. If I'm going to listen to anybody, it might as well be somebody I like, so I vote for Ebert and the other guy.
