When I Was a Kid....

WIWAK it seemed that summer vacation was a long as the rest of the year. How can it only be 10 weeks?? Wish I could make it feel that long again.

WIWAK I loved summer vacation, camping, fishing, roasting marshmallows and feeling the burn of too much time in the sun after the stars came out....now it's just the hotter days out of the year with no vacation in site.

WIWAK- no cell phones or "play dates." Mom figured we would come home when we got hungry. Or needed stitches. For the four of us kids, and our friends, you never knew which would come first. (farm kids)

Question for all- Did you ever sneak away Dad's axe and carve out a hideout in a stand of cedar trees? Careful and selective limb cutting allowed a curved path your bike could be ridden thru. But couldn't be seen as a path from the gravel road.

WIWAK people didn't freak out to see kids out without parents watching them.

Surfing

WIWAK surfing the net and calling people were mutually exclusive events.

WIWAK Surfing meant getting wet and stoked and being in the sun not in front of a screen , alone for endless hours. I still do the former but way too much of the later.

WIWAK, big vinyl was the main way to listen to the music you wanted, most houses didn't have microwaves, and you got the pages sticky, not the keyboard

WIWAK we had 8-Track tapes and there was no rewind or fast forward...if you wanted to hear a song again, you had to wait for the track to change and really quick go through three track changes to get back to the one your favorite song was on.

WIWAK...
My Dad told us we " had a 100 acres to go play in - so get outside!!".
And we did.
We made up plays and stories and performed them. And charged admission.
We played sports and I had enough siblings for 2 teams. And I learned that sometimes you win but sometimes you lose....even when you try your best.
We picked stones in a field for a week and then turned around and would hoe that same field for another week. Boring....
When school let out for the summer, we would spend 2 weeks at the cottage....swimming, reading comic books, goofing off and going to the corner store for candy. And chasing boys at the beach when I got older....

WIWAK we didn't have remote controls, we had to get up to change the channel and we only had three VHF channels and one or two UHF channels. We did homework as soon as we got home from school, ate dinner as a family and played outside until the street lights came on!

When I was a kid I was a spelling bee champ :cattail:

Ahhh, but do you remember the word you had to spell that made you the champ? ;)

WIWAK we watched the Wizard of Oz once a year and didn't find out until I was a teenager that it changed to color!!!
