90% of the time I go in the evening, after work. Between 9-11, just before they close. It's due to the nature of pedestrian-centric transit in this city instead of using a car. If I have to haul bags of produce around while riding rails, I'm not thinking about going back out the house later, it's a one-way trip.

Most nabe bodegas around subway stops here are 24-hours, but I don't do volume shopping there, they are better for last-minute or singular item purchases.

The fishmonger down the avenue, I go there during the daytimes.

A good thing about living in a Midwestern City is ...

1. They are always open.

2, They always sell the freshest produce.. Either it Hydroponic or Green house grown.

3. Midwestern meat. You don't get any better. I challenge anyone to disagree.

I did not have the chance to engage in a tête-à-tête with Never. Interesting av.

Afternoon is the most pleasant time to shop. Shopping at night is surreal.

I will drop by the market on the way home from work. Yeah, it's crowded then, but I'm usually tasked to pick something up that's needed in the household. If I do major food buying, it's normally on a weekend.

If I am to cook wings on Sunday for the game, I will hit Mr Prime Beef at noon on Friday. Waiting until after work or Saturday could be a potential disaster. Likewise, if ribs are desired, I will pick them up on Friday at noon. That gives plenty of time to dry brine stuff and get a good rub on.

Used to hit a 24hr Metro at 2am. Would follow the guy around putting price reduction stickers on tenderloin and other prime meats. Straight into freezer when I got home.

Shopping anywhere but a 24hr Metro I could probably have saved the same money. But only one near me with it's own butcher and some seriously good selection of meat and fish.

Would shop at another grocery store for basics. Low cost store had best selection of international foods.

Worked afternoons for years and years. And a night owl too.

Evenings!

After the kids are in bed. Say, ten? Store is nearly empty, and I'm a night owl. :)

Second choice would be early morning, but only in an emergency 'cause mornings are

(Though someday in the future I may have a lover and feel differently about mornings than I do now. ;))

The meat counters are never open early or late...

Always heed the advice of your butcher...

I voted never, but that is a fib. I do go once in a while... but more often I have groceries delivered. It's all part of my slow slide from self-reliant, tough, and swarthy, to luxuriously self-indulgent. Next on the list is maid service and lawn care. But those are simply tiny stepping stones, the giant leap will be when I successfully retain a personal assistant to run my life. Good god do I want this so much.

Hey Slushie...you've been on my ignore list for ages and I have no idea why. Any clue? Did you start one of those endless picture threads where people don't talk? I find I like your stilo, mama....but what am I going to find when I pardon you and lift you out of the stocks and set you on your feet in the market square? A sweet pea? ...or a dirty monkey.

This better not be one of those dumb parody threads, Zum.

Walmart is not 24/7 around here.

BulkBarn closes at 9pm. I get my skim milk powder, cocoa powder, sugar and oatmeal from there. Their parmesan cheese is not overly tasty but cheap as fuck. You can put lots on pasta at their prices.

Are you my butcher?

Both Mr Prime Beef and Butcher Block #9 can be on my way home. Costco is too, if I want a pallet of ribs, pork butt, or a nice whole brisket. For whole plate short ribs, I go to C&J Tender Meat Co.

So, their parm has more sawdust in it?

Maybe not sawdust. But whatever they use for powders to not clump up. As tasty as Walmart's stuff in a bag.

Only real cheese I buy is Wensleydale and a sheep milk cheese from eastern European food store near by. I can deal with Black Diamond old cheddar and BulkBarn parmesan.

Walmart and WinCo are an hour away. I try to go once a month and buy in bulk. I have a big fridge-only and a big chest freezer. Milk can be frozen, eggs can sit on the counter if need be.

Shop at the local chain store for fresh fruit and veg etc. in between trips into town but try to avoid it. I pretty much have unlimited storage space for canned goods so prefer to stock up on canned (or frozen) produce rather than pay the local prices.

I'm not much of a meat eater, but I do like a nice tri-tip!

That's a shit commute. You have to get a pad that has a supermarket situated between it and your stop.

Roookie new yorkers.....;)

Sorry, but Parmigiano Reggiano is the ONLY Parmesan. I dont care if its $15 a pound... It's all that matters. Everything else tastes like vomit.

There's a Key Food right on the way to the subway about three blocks down, but I hate it. I'm too used to going to the Whole Foods at Union Square. Better selections.

A new WF just opened up closer to my office at Bryant Park. Might start bopping over there now.
