When do posts get "archived"?

I went searching for a post of mine from April 2004 and it was gone, moved into the "archive".

As far as I can tell, the archive has no search function (except via google).

So, does that mean that in a year or two, all of Colly's posts will be gone?

I've searched for old posts (older than a couple of years) and found them. But that was back in August... so I wouldn't know about now. But the archive was around then too. And I have no idea what purpose this post serves.
