When large and powerful corporations commit crimes and generally do things that are illegal, how come they are almost never held accountable for them?

Is it because they have all of the bigwig Washington politicians on their massive payrolls? Could they perhaps control the media and law enforcement agencies as well?

After doing some research about corporatocry and crony capitalism, I am led to believe that the US government and national media are almost wholly controlled by private industry and corporate special interest. This explains how big businesses are almost never investigated or prosecuted for their illegal activities.
