Cool! I'm sure there are other devices like this, or at least there should be in the works. I'm surprised I haven't seen any out there yet.

Looks like a good alternative for someone who is relatively young and fit. Won't get rid of a wheel chair need for the more elderly and confused, though, I don't think.

Once the elderly and confused are gone, it will.

That was stupid.

Looks like someone has turned into a junior safe-bet.

That wasn't an insult. Once the generation of people unable and unwilling to become cyborgs are gone, wheelchairs will be obsolete.

Besides, we don't need to get rid of wheelchairs for the people who are comfortable in them. This is an alternative, not a replacement.

That too is stupid--and quite insensitive, Cruel. I can well believe you are only 18. The population share of seniors has been increasing, not decreasing. If you think the future is only going to be fit, young people, you are dumb as a rock. (which is a possibility.)

I think this chewing up of the scenery in AH that you, safe-bet, Stella, Reload, and a few others are engaging in at the moment has made you witless.

Right this minute there are hundreds of once-fit, still-young war veterans coming home from the mideast. Some of them might prefer this device which is an alternative for those who choose it, not a substitute mandated for everyone.

It might not be meant as an insult, but it comes across as ignorant. There are a lot of disabled people with mental disorders that can't wheel themselves around for a wide variety of reasons. some of them suffer from brain damage, dementia, catatonia, and a plethora of disorders that I could never think of. For them, a wheelchair would be best.

and it is always good to have a low tech backup on standby for emergencies.

Also, this is an "alternative". The Wheelchair didn't completely replace crutches, crutches didn't replace canes, and this won't replace the wheelchair. It will just be added into to cacophony of mobility aids.

So what, Stella? That has nothing to do with either what Cruel or I posted.

I did not consider my response too well, I apologize.

Perhaps wheelchairs will go the way of the newspaper, used by a few, but only by a few.

I. Am. Astounded! Hey, people, I'm old. My Medicare became effective as of today, okay? And let me tell you that thing is a wonder. Replace the wheelchair? It's not designed to replace the wheelchair for the feeble but for the paraplegic! What do I know about paraplegia? I worked on a spinal column injury ward for about 13 months back in the '70's. Until it becomes possible (and the day is coming) to knit the nerves back together again this is the best solution so far. If some of the guys I knew back then could get their hands on one of these they'd take them out dancing. A wonderful advance.

And if it takes becoming a cyborg to keep me around to see what comes next, where do I sign?

I think this is great! I didn't walk or stand for about 18 months, and I would have loved one of these. I met people in PT whose lives would have dramatically improved by such a device. I would like to see how it does on uneven terrain.

The world is a very different place when you are in a chair, you become invisible in many ways. Also lots of things can not be done easily, even ada spec doors that open inward are near impossible. Pulling out a chair so you can get to a conference table is very hard. It is very hard to maintain your independence, I would have not be able to survive by myself with current day wheelchairs.

True that! I had a close relative who was wheelchair bound and required a lot of assistance all the time--including a bulky device to help her stand for that hour's time. I'm delighted with this awesome device and I'm only surprised it took this long to invent it--and equally surprised that no one here has yet told me that devices like this have been around for a while. Segways have been around long enough you'd have thought someone would have used them for a model prior to now.

But if this is really one of the first of it's kind then I hope you'll all spread the word to anyone whose life would change if they only knew about it.

Cost is supposed to be about $15k which is not bad.

That's a lot less than I expected, but still 2-3X the cost of a high-end wheelchair. Not a lot of insurance companies are going to spring for that. Still, it's an amazing machine.

Happy birthday bugbear! :rose:

A plot bunny comes to mind, here. What would sex with a cyborg be like? What would it be like for the cyborg?

That might depend on how you define cyborg?

MY space ship "Sugarbaby" will have sex with her captain using ad-hoc constructs, but will be haunted by the notion that she's somehow missing something in the act. That's an important plot point.
