What's wrong with being Jewish?

Then you would know.

Lit is great fun. But it is not where you find Knowledge -- at least of things like history.

They're all jealous of our history of fine cuisine.

Thanks for letting me know what I should post about and what I shouldn't.

I'm not looking for a history lesson, I'm looking for opinions.

You asked what you were missing. I suggested that a book by a scholar who has studied the subject for many years would answer your question better than what you will find here.

I never objected to your posting.

I hope that was sarcasm- no one in my stepmom's family can cook worth shit. My mom, who's Christian, can cook better Jewish food than they can. :)

Yessum, of course it was. Although I can cook, we're not exactly known for our cuisine. Although there's really nothing tastier than a nice kugel or a really well made gefilte fish.

Ask yadayada or whatever his name is...

He claims to represent the Muslim/Islamic point of view. They've been persecuting the Jews a lot longer than any Nazi or Communist ever did. He might have a view that normal folk might miss, or ignore. :D

Gefilte fish? Now there is an argument for censorship on this board if I have ever seen one...

This post was much different in tone from your first post...

"Read a Book"

I see nothing in there that suggests a book by a scholar who has studied a subject. Again...I wasn't looking for a history lesson. I know the history. I was looking for opinions.

Your second post...

"Then you would know.

Lit is great fun. But it is not where you find Knowledge -- at least of things like history."

This implies that the post doesn't belong, in my opinion.

Nothing wrong

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being Jewish, its a proud and old race. Some of my best friends are Jewish, and they are the nicest people you could have the pleasure to know. They are just people like we all are, sharing this very little blue ball in space. And as for history, they have more written about them then mine. But we have more movies LOL "Native-American" but we lost most of them. Where-as the Jewish when they fought, they won most of the time.

The Chosen

I made the mistake of repeating a joke I heard on a jewish comedy album once, in front of my Bubba and Tante, it went something like this.
"Why are the jews referred to as the chosen people, and who did they piss off to get the job"

This was before I was shown the faded blue numbers on their left forearms.

I was very young then, and when the dust had settled, I was not so young anymore.:rose: :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose:

Actually, I've had some homemade gefilte fish that was pretty tasty. The canned stuff is repulsive, though. Hell, put enough horseradish on it and I can eat just about anything, though.

PB - put your thread back on track... rather than argue over what seems to me to be a mis-communication.

To be honest - my first reaction to your thread was exactly the same. You didn't make it clear you were asking for opinions. It could very easily have been mistaken for ignorance. I'm not saying you are... but too many people in this world are and, as you obviously know, we Jews are very sensitive to that kind of thing. We know all too well the dangers of ignorance.

Your initial post to start this thread did not state a truth and ask for opinions - it sounded like a question coming from lack of knowledge.

Sorry, Cha-Cha. Jews aren't a "race."

My three word reply meant two things.

If you were serious in your question... it is a very complex subject. You will get varied opinions here, but nothing like the depth you would get in reading an appropriate book.

If your question was banter... then so was the reply... and why worry about it? ;)

Ok, fine. I'll be serious for a minute.

Try Abba Eban's My People: History of The Jews. It's a very easy to read history and gives a lot of the situational aspects surrounding different periods during which Jews were subject to discrimination, stereotyping and other fun stuff.

It's not exactly fine dining, is it?

Most of what we think of as traditionally Jewish food came here from Eastern Europe with our grandparents and great grandparents. Most of them were very poor and as a result they made do with whatever they could get. None of it is particularly healthy, but we still enjoy it once in a while. We eat it because we want to, and it brings back nice memories.

As my grandmother would say: Mayo is strictly for the goyim.

Jewish Race

Miles: Sorry pard but yes they are, as well as a religion. If course we are all a part of the human race, but there are subdivisions and Jewish is one of those subdivisions.

IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM was I trying to put anyone down of Jewish decent. I've been doing some history reading...mostly on religion and I find it interesting that the Jewish people have been persecuted over and over and over again throughout history. I see no logical reason in any reading other than ignorance and/or fear of someone/something that is different.

heheh! I wouldn't eat mayo until I was in my late 20's. I just couldn't adjust to it at all!!

It's true, Miles. The traditional stuff isn't so hot. At least the Eastern European, which is my heritage. But man oh man, the Morrocan/northern African food? Kickssss ass!

I finally took Pesach cooking away from my mom. Last year we had roasted lamb with a red wine sauce, roasted new potatoes (oil, not butter of course), tons of veggies and no icky, slimey farfel stuffing!

So, whatcha doin' next Nisan? ;)
