I mean seriously

Big heads, big eyes, no facial features to differentiate greatly from every other character.. women who have the emotional iq of 12 year olds while all dressing like slutty 14 year olds. I've seen a few and they're interesting right into the point the women grow spineless because they have a crush.. its borderline misoynistic.

So whats the appeal?

I don't see what the big deal about it is...I've never liked Japanimation...they may make better cars, but Hollywood certainly makes better movies. Once you've seen one "save neo-Tokyo from the leftover killer cyborgs of World War XII" movie, you've seen them all.

My $0.02 anyway...

What? Where? *looks around*

I don't see any anime fucking anywhere?

Well, for me, the appeal isn't that crap you're talking about. That's romantic comedy crap.

"Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex"
"Appleseed"
"Silent Mobius"
"Gundam: Stardust 0083"

The above are just a few examples that doesn't feature that any of the emotionally immature crap. Serious storylines, serious characters, and people dying left and right. No gratutious nudity or sex.

As for appeal to other people, regarding the above stuff... Well, emotional escapism maybe? I don't understand it, either.

There's penty of it here in the SRP poppy..just throw a stick, bound to hit one of those silly jumping throguh the air giggly bubble headed related threads

Well some Anime is much different, And I'll stick that Grave of the Fireflies, and Princess Mononoke are a damn sight better than most of the movies Hollywood has shat out in recent years. Or can you tell me that Cool and wonderful as Pirates of the Carribean is, it isn't mindless comedy and entertainment, mostly appealing to the lowest common denominator. You want to tell me that Will Ferrel didn't make a career from Old School? Or that Sentinel was a great movie? That Nacho Libre was?

Anime Like Hollywood, or (Shudder) network TV has something for everyone. And A lot of ANIME fans don't watch the crap or series as they come. No offense to any of the fans of these mentioned shows.

But for every One Ranma 1/2, there are ten terrible clones.

And American re done Anime is pretty damn terrible compared to the originals. I read Naruto thought it was cool, I watched it and couldn't get past the first arc it was that bad on Toonami. It was like they had taken the show out back sodomised it and ripped every bit of creativity out if it, then cast bad voice actors.

Take it as it is, Not everything is the same.

Personally I think you should watch Ghost in the Shell for a strong female lead. Because there is no Major in any show on T.V. Not even close.

The biggest mistake people make when turning to anime is they assume to fucking much. Don't go into it with the false idea that every anime show you watch is about some pre-adolescent teen who's coming into their own, meets their significant other while coming across some strange super power and saving the world one youma (monster) at a time.

I'll admit my very first anime was Ronin Warriors, the American one. I'm not sure of the original Japanese name for it but at any rate I grew up on that. Next was Sailormoon and the sadest part was that these anime shows were the basis of all shows.

How uber wrong I was. Never before had I known there were a lot of very gory, adult based anime out there that appealed ot my creativity as I was growing.

Some of those shows were mentioned in previous posts above. There is a thin line between the bubblegum pop anime of which I grew up on and those newer more down to earth realistic sci-fi, fantasy shows that I am quite familiar with today.

Cowboy Bebop has its moments of comedy along with some cool techno sci-fi allure. Chobits would be more bubble gum pop but it's an interesting concept for a human to fall in love with a personal computer (or Perscom) with a human base. Azumanga Daioh, Excel Saga and FLCL are the more outrageous of the anime genre dealing with out right stupidity on its highest level. Love them all. I suppose what it gets down to is what you like.

Why harp on something you don't understand (or may not want to understand)? It makes no sense. I don't spend time trying to understand something that I may never like therefore I simply walk away without making others uncomfortable.

Hollywood could learn a few lessons from anime/manga productions and vice versa. I like all forms of entertainment mind you from anime to Bollywood (yes BOLLYWOOD not Hollywood...look it up!) I think the question isn't what's on the surface of anime but what you find deeper.

Read up on some of the stories get to know the characters as you would in a movie or tv show. And above all don't knock something simply because you don't understand. Hehe... its better to research it or leave it alone completely. Just a word of thought.

At any rate I do understand your plight I was in your shoes a long time ago wondering what the big deal was all about. Now I see why. Anime/manga as a whole isn't targeted toward kids which most people would first believe... its targeted toward a full range of people from all shapes and sizes (and age groups). Just look around shop until you find something appealing to you. I'm open minded toward anything at least once.. :D

Happy hunting... or understanding. Heh

Watch some Cowboy Bebop, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Vision of Escaflowne and get back to me.

And on the flip side of the coin, I'm sure most Japanese percieve American movies in much the same way as they were portrayed in that one Ebaumsworld vid, The Ultimate Trailer or something like that.

Seriously. Totally fucking lame, especially when you consider all of the really cool cinema that's coming out of Japan these days.

Kuu has made our case pretty damn well. There is a lot of anime, and for everyone, dealing with any kind of topics. You just gotta look out for it.

Which is the same with Hollywood. Personally, I loved Four Brothers because it had a 70s feel to it... but nearly every gangster film I had seen until then was the same Schwarzenegger wannabe (barring Face to Face, which was just awesome).

Anime series... I started with... I think it was Area 88. An awesome piece of militaristic fiction dealing with the Middle East and mercenary pilots. It had huge eyes and ridiculous sparkliness at times, but the story was really mature and cool, mixing some fantasy here and there (pretty rare).

Then it was the usual. Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball... shows which I hate right now. Sailor Moon might be Ok, but Dragon Ball... BLEGH!

There are new shows right now that are quite original and excellent now, though, and deal with pretty adult topics. Kino's Travels, Full Metal Alchemist, Major, Ghost in the Shell, Shingetsutan Tsukihime...

Sorry...the only way you'll get me to watch anime is by promising me a night with a beautiful Japanese exchange student, or heavily sedating me and strapping me into a chair. I'd prefer the girl, but sedation has its benefits too...

I almost want to do a FMA thread. Lily had one but it died out.

And Diego was such a cool villan character I had going.

What's that No the reason you have that rush is because I just transmuted some of your blood stream into cocaine.

The only issue with some folks getting invovled with anime is so they can get lucky with some Japanese girl... WRONG.

Please... get over yourselves people. Its not gonna happen unless you travel abroad. Even then... but yeah.

Katamari's got some good points...woot! And i think some of the more creative media we got these days is found in anime. But manga is better, cause they got more details in the story that the animation just couldn't pull off.

Hey, what the hell's wrong with that? A man can dream, can't he?

I want to be Maes. I cried when he was killed. He was such a cool character. or greed.

I think a homunculi thread would be pretty cool.

I'll pass on Homunculi until I've seen the whole first season (some 50 chapters, and I'm still on the 21st).

Booby Alchemist... hmmmm... ;) :p
