Mic or Mike?

OMG - I got past 5,000 posts and didn't notice :S

Well, first off, congratulations!

Second, I think it's mic. That's the only way I've ever seen in abbreviated in all the amateur productions I've seen the sound board for.

SSSarahhh will have the definitive answer.

Pay it no mind V.

Whoever programmed that function had an odd idea of grammar and sentence structure.

You can disable that function BTW. ;)

And Mike is a guys name. You speak into a mic. :D

I looked this up a while back and according to Webster's New Collegiate dictionary, mic or mike are both correct. I prefer mic.

Right. Mike is older (coined in 1924) and mic is newer (coined in 1961), so it would seem to matter only if the target audience would have a preference. If the musical stuff was only incidental to the storyline, mike would probably be preferable, because it's more established with readers (and, so, less distracting where you as the author don't want the reader to be distracted). If the manuscript is heavy on the contemporary music, mic is probably better.

As my only role in the entertainment business University Campus Activities Board President...Its mic! Both are correct but when you divy out the jobs for the show and you put mike with the mikes he gets a bit pissy for some reason. :D

Hrmm... it is only a passing reference, but I find mike confusing as I think it ought to be capitalised (because it's a proper noun, isn't it?) hence why I prefer mic...

So . . . um . . . why'd you ask in the first place?

(no, it isn't a proper noun--it's a short form for microphone--unless you were actually asking how to spell the short form of the male given name).

What I provided is what a publisher would consider when deciding how to render such a word when there are multiple accepted versions.

In case noone else thought mic was correct. duh. No point spelling things a certain way just because I think they look nicer if noone else will understand it.

but the word 'mike' appears to be a proper noun missing capitalisation - I would assume it was a man's name spelt wrongly before I would assume it was an abbreviation of microphone

Thanks, all, for your help.

Well, duh, anyone (including you) could have just looked in the dictionary.

I think it's fine for a poster to ask for advice and then go off and do what they want, but it escapes me why they feel they have to repost that they don't like the choice that's in the dictionary--as if someone who actually tried to help them was some sort of dummy because they actually know (or know how to look up) the answer to the question posed--and know how the choice between two options is typically determined.

Congrats on your 5K!

Just got finished with rehearsal and fighting with 9 lapel mics and I tell ya - I couldn't care how the fuck you spell 'em. Just as long as they fucking work. Fucking feedback from the fucking monitor and the fucking weak-ass mixer. Pissing me off.

Ahem.

I'd go with mic.

I love it when you get all huffy and talk dirty.

Laughing -

I mean - hey! I'm trying to be serious here!

Actually there's no hope for it. My cast and crew do the same thing. I'll be on a mild rant about something relatively important and then I'll get a smart ass grin along with a witty comment and I'll have to laugh.

I'm hopeless.

Actually, I believe Mic. would be the proper abreviation of Microphone. But common usage treats it as a word rather than an abreviation and omits the period.

So for "Sweet" Sarah.... that would be, in England, "9 bloddy lapel mykes"

And if you are curious.... no... there is no Russian equivalent to "mic", no matter how they spell it in England or Wales. The Russian word is suspiciously like the English word and pronounced "meechrophone"... As in, "there are thousands of meechrophones in the US Embassy building, but Igor forget to change the tape."
