What's the relative distribution of site traffic?

I was aware that Incest gets nine times as much traffic as everything else combined, and that Erotic Horror hardly gets any traffic at all, but I'm only starting to realize just how much variation there is between, say, Nonhuman and Transsexuals. Are there any official statistics for how much traffic each part of the site gets? Where are those statistics located?

You'd have to do the research, which is going to involve a lot of clicking. The only thing Lit has that's official is the "Most Read" toplist, and it would be useless, because it's overwhelmed by Incest and LW to the point where everything else is off the bottom of the list.

You'll more or less have to grab a representive sample from somewhere like the Last 30 days toplist for each category, click each story, then check the views at the bottom of page 1.

Rinse, repeat.

You could check the view statistics from my contest tracks and get a general idea, though.

Incest does get more traffic than any other category, but nowhere near that much more. Based on views of my stories, Anal, First Time and LW are close to Incest. The least viewed, in no particular order, are Non-erotic, Humor and Satire, Science Fiction Reviews and Essays, Chain Stories and Celebrity.

Poetry probably gets fewer views than almost any category of stories.

A "Most Read" list is always useless because it's self-perpetuating. By even getting on the Most-Read list a story can bump its total reads by a significant percentage, thus boosting itself higher up the list, thus bumping its reads again, thus...

(Most porn databases do it smarter by having their list cover a limited time frame--"Videos with most views over the past 30 days" or something like. Alas, L&M didn't think it quite that far out.)

I agree "Most reads" is somewhat pointless, because many of those "reads" are just views, and the reader didn't go beyond the first paragraph. Even so, such things tend to even out, so a lot of views would mean more reads than just a few views.

There are three lists on Lit: Views in the last 30 days, views in the last year and all time views.

I don't think you'll find anyplace where they have a breakdown of clicks by category. My stories are all multi-chapter and I write real stories with real characters and plots (as opposed to simple narratives narrowly focused on a particular sexual practice/fetish/orientation/interest). So I can't just sumbit a whole story in the same category, and different chapters have to be submitted in different categories. So perhaps this will help. Here are the chapter numbers, categories, and click counts for my current story up through the most current chapter posted (it is 31 chapters in length). I've omitted the first chapter since first chapters always get an inordinate number of clicks.

As you can see, Lit readers aren't here looking for love stories. Click counts tank when a chapter deals with romance. Most are just here for quick wank fetish stories, will stop reading when a story turns to romance and will seemingly pick it up again only when the story turns back to their favorite fetish, and aren't really interested in real stories. It's just the way it is.

Hope this was helpful.

I don't believe you mean "Fetish" at least not the way the term is defined here. None of the chapters was classified as being Fetish.

If you had a chapter classified as Anal or Incest, that chapter would probably have as many views as the rest of the chaptrers combined.

I wonder why chapter 5 had so many more views than 4 or 6.

Damn, is Romance really that low? I don;t know why, but I always thought that was one of the better ones.

I think it depends on what you mean by "better ones". Not to pick on Bonnie, but since she posted her views I went to see the vote tallies:

Chapter 18 (romance) has 1,500 views, 18 votes, and 4 comments
Chapter 19 (nonconsent) has 7,200 views, 22 votes, and 0 comments
Chapter 22 (bdsm) has 3,700 views, 17 votes, and 0 comments
(Those are coming from the toplists; Bonnie, my apologies if they are off.)

So a big range of views, but fairly constant votes and an outlier in terms of comments.

Me, I'd rather have the romance stats. From my own stories/chapters, even when the views are low, the feedback is good; my last chapter has only 3,300 views, but 94 votes and 10 comments, and a lot of constructive emails. And when I say constructive, I mean I've received emails with multiple paragraphs from people with far more writing knowledge than I have, feedback that has fundamentally changed the way I write and think about writing. I'm sure the other categories have people who provide good feedback, too, but since romance isn't primarily wank material, I'd imagine there's a higher ratio of feedback writers:wankers than in other categories.

Also, remember how many of those views are coming from random clicks and internet searches. I have a feeling bdsm and noncon are common searches. Romance? Not so much.

Sad that 94 votes out of 3,300 views (3%) is considered good, but it is. My latest has 93 votes on about 6K

I think Romance gets a "higher class" of reader, they are looking for decent writing and story over stroke. I think good plots and depth of character is expected over there.

I actually got some real good ones after my series finished. Multiple paragraphs from the incest crowd! Imagine that, it's hard to type with one hand!

Yeah, I think I'm using 'fetish' just in the context of what is someone's 'thing' or 'turn-on'.

I was especially struck by 22, 23, 24. 22 and 24 in the BDSM category at 3261 and 4853 respectively sandwiched around a romance chapter with less than half the clicks of either of the others.

I'm glad you've had a good experience here. I think the site is a good idea. There are some glitches from time to time, but largely it's good to have a site where authors can post with relative ease and readers can access stories for free. But the readers here really suck. Because they're getting a product for free they place no value on it. I get very very little feedback, and it really ticks me off. I feel like the readers here only want to greedily suck up what they can get without 'paying' authors in terms of feedback/comments (at least that's been my experience). It makes one feel used.

My current story is my last here. I'm pretty sure I'll end up posting the last chapters, but I really haven't had the time lately to fool with it. Normally the next chapter would be posting I guess tonight or tomorrow night. When it doesn't I can guarantee that's when I'll get all sorts of messages asking me where the next chapter is. Yeesh!
