What's the deal with beta readers?

How do you find a beta reader? I've got a new story, and I can't tell if there's enough detail in there for my readers to picture what I'm imagining.

Worst-case scenario - I'll read the early editions just to give you some feedback without going through the nuts and bolts of sentence structure, spelling and grammar, etc.
