What's so wrong about people not having to die?

What is so wrong about people not having to worry they might die? What's so wrong about making sure everyone can have a certain standard of living? Not live like kings, but just have certain baseline stuff. Maybe not a big screen TV, but a working toilet? Maybe not a cadillac, but a least a subway? Maybe not lobster, but something to eat regularly? If they work hard, they can have more, and can always have the oppuortunity to earn more, but who don't have to worry that one bad descision or one short sighted choice will doom them and their children?
