Yankees offer Strawberry job to deliver anti-drug message
Associated Press
New York -- Baseball great Darryl Strawberry's long battle with drugs and alcohol has turned into a job offer.
New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner wants Strawberry to advise minor league players on how to avoid the pitfalls that plagued his career.
He'll also offer hitting tips.
But Strawberry says "It's not about baseball, it's about real life."
The former Yankees slugger is undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer. He's also serving out a sentence for violating probation following a 1999 arrest for drug possession and soliciting prostitution.
Strawberry is living at a drug treatment center in Tampa, Florida and remains under house arrest.
He could start his new job this spring.
